I can get a 1000W PSU for around a R1000. I buy direct from the suppliers so get everything at cost price

Pairing your planned system with anything less than a GTX970 or R9390 kinda defeats of the purpose of going high end on the rest of the system.

You can get a PowerColor R9390 8GB for R5900 retail and will be more future proof than the former.

I5 Bundle - R3300
R9 270 - R1500
Star Citizen on medium under 1080P, 40fps. I am quite happy with that to be honest. Don't have a 1080P monitor.

That doesn't sound good at all, but to each...
Is this the going price? It says R1000 off currently. Very tempting!!!
Been like that since last year October. MSI, Sapphire, etc., are more expensive, so I don't see why anyone would not want to go with the PowerColor version.

Ah cool, when would one expert gtx 970 and comparable radeon cards to come down in price here, assuming rand dollar remains the same?

Possibly when the Polaris and Pascal cards are released. Don't expect a dramatic drop in price immediately though, but if you're in the market for a card I would rather wait for the new cards to be released, check the benchmarks and then decide.

Over the last couple of years I've totally dropped out of the loop regarding hardware and product knowledge.

I'm looking to buy components for a semi-gaming rig and would appreciate some recommendations.

For a graphics card I'm looking for something round about R3000.

For a mother board ... something not over R2000.

You're spending too much money on the MB and too little on the GPU.

What is it you actually need and what will the usage be like?

Total budget?

Well I only play Defiance and Star Citizen, everything works so I am happy. Besides work 90% pc time is spent on series and movies. Would be a bit silly to build a R20 000 rig just for that. :)

cheap i5, cheap motherboard (H81), 8Gb ram, spend the rest on the GPU + PSU.

Lol don't worry I've got the hardware but spend most of the time browsing the web and watching YouTube videos.

Looking for a cheap desktop case.
Must support sizes of up to ATX; well... its actually for an m-ATX motherboard.
It would be nice if its width is as long as my Lian Li PC-C60 case (44.5 cm).

What would your range of cheap be?
I'm still trying to get myself to commit to my build.
I was going to get the Coolermaster Mastercase Pro 5 (~R2300) but have settled on going for something a little different and have instead added the Corsair Carbide Air 540 (~R2300) to my list. I have taken a sudden liking to the "Cube" cases and this seems to be a good value for money case.

Another option would be the Coolermaster HAF XB. Also a cube case, but around R1700 if memory serves.

Not meaning to double post, but just to separate a response from my question:

Is it still worth doing a Skylake upgrade Now? Intel and AMD have give some insight into their plans for the coming year, and don't know if it's worth waiting.

It's almost a rhetorical question, as I do need to do an upgrade soon, but it would possibly dramatically drop the price of the components I'm currently aiming for if I were to do a "proper" upgrade roughly a year after this one.

I'd wait for the next round of hardware. In the meantime, keep an eye on Carbonite listings for amazing deals. Might find something too good to resist.

Something very cheap and very plain looking.
It has to be of the same form factor of the Lian Li PC-C60.
Its just to fit in with my planned setup.

This isn't the right thread but here goes - does anyone have this combination of CPU and motherboard - 2500k and Gigabyte z68xp-UD3? I forgot how to overclock and the interwebs are confusing me :(

Got it to 4.2Ghz stable but not having much luck getting any further - all I've adjusted are turbo ratios and CPU VID so far.

Got it to 4.5Ghz so that's okay...I've got a greedy chip though. Wants 1.4V to get there and run Prime95
