The PC Build Thread

Hi ponder

I was upgrading Comogam to a better hosting solution, which would've caused some downtime. The upgrade was fully completed this morning, so everything should be working perfectly now. If you can't access the PC Builder's Guide or any part of the site please inform me, as your IP Address might've been blocked by CloudFlare, which is the CDN Comogam is using.

Still no go. 41.183.7.xxx /8

Im itching to upgrade.. My PC is still pretty decent but it is ageing. In all honesty I doubt a would notice a difference if I upgraded as I dont really game too much anymore.

Spec: AMD 965 quad 3.4, 8gb ram, 6950 2gb, 128gb vertex 3 etc.

Every day I find my self checking out new components on wootware.. Wouldn't mind a 3570k

Thanks Duff for the suggestions. Finally bought everything and my son is as happy as a pig in the proverbial...

I settled on a combination between your "budget" and "workhorse" build.

Always a pleasure to help :)

I've checked and CloudFlare isn't blocking your IP, my WebHost though could be responsible, I'll contact them and see if they are blocking your IP.

In the meantime you could try to access Comogam via NewIPNow.com which allows you to view any site with a new free IP Address. That should allow you to access Comogam once again.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused ponder.

Decent, about average price only thing I would change is to chuck the Corsair RAM and go for cheaper Kingston Value stuff, really no point going for gaming RAM unless you want to overclock. And maybe add in an SSD

Trying to figure out what I can cut down on without losing 7950 - need to shave off like R700

Guess if I got cheaper RAM and the powercolor instead of the Twin Frozr

Chucking the RAM could save you like R200 if you're lucky, maybe another R200 off the case but other than that I can't see much. Check Matrix Warehouse for the CPU they're a tiny bit cheaper...

EDIT:- or drop to a 500GB HDD, easiest thing to expand on later...

So this is the PC I bought 5 months ago...

ASRock z77 Pro4
i5 3570k
G.Skill 8gb
Gigabyte 7870 OC 2gb
Vertex 4 256gb
Western Digital 750 gb
LG DVD writer
Coolermaster 690 II Advanced
Antec VP650P 650w

2 weeks ago it was carried out my cottage while I slept, along with 2 externals, my logitech sub woofer (they left the now useless speakers), my USB stick, my 23" samsung monitor, my Logitech Momo wheel, 2 xbox wireless gamepads, my logitech webcam...and other **** that wasn't pc related like my tv, ipod nano, jacket, two sets of shoes, glasses, wallet etc.

I'm supposed to find out what insurance is doing for me early this week so am looking at replacing the system at around the price my new one cost. Obviously this depends on what I get from insurance but just wanted to start getting my head around this so I can move quickly when the money is ready.

I got almost everything from Rebeltech last time and had a good experience. Doing that also meant they could put the system together, which for me is ideal.

So I like the system a lot, but had a few issues with the ASRock compatibility with win8 and the coolermaster case didn't knock my socks off. If the payout exceeds my expectations then I would love the Corsair 600t...but it's damn expensive :-(

And maybe a Gigabyte mobo instead of the ASRock? Any suggestions?

I am happy with my ASRock Z77 Xtreme4 mobo. Not fully compatible with Win8 but has drivers for everything I require. I have the same box less the "Advanced" which I am also happy with because I mainly want a box that is tidy inside and has enough room to move parts in and out (my previous box was minute compared to the new box). If you want a decent looking and sized box, look at the following (you said 600t was expensive - found one priced at over R1600, so the below are between 1000 and 1600):

Coolermaster Storm Series - Enforcer
Antec Dark Fleet DF-35 Gaming Chassis
Antec 600SE
Antec 1100
Coolermaster CM Scout II
Aerocool Xpredator Evil
Antec Nine Hundred Two V3
Thermaltake Armor Revo
Gigabyte Sumo 5115

Thanks for the options. Quite like the Scout handles, getting the case out from under my table (which is carpeted) was a real pain in the ass. As was taking it to work on occasion.

Think that might be the way to go but am still in love with 600t. Just need to know how much money I have to work with. May be worth getting it and downgrading somewhere else.

Hi Guys

This week I will be re-doing my whole PC / work setup. I am looking at buying and putting together the following PC.

Can I get some recommendations as to what will work, what not and other recommendations?

The PC this far looks like it will cost me around the 40k mark, but I am looking at spending around 50k.

Even the i5 3570k will run any game at the moment on max. Unless you will be doing heavy rendering or video encoding, save yourself R1000 and get the i5.

Chuck the blu-ray burner, get only 16Gb of RAM(upgrade later) and get a smaller UPS, 2100W is overkill...

EDIT:- and for the love of all that's holy get an SSD!!!
