The PC Build Thread

Let me try this. I'm busy building a little PC for myself to play with in my free time. So far I'm thinking about this:

I7 - 4770K
Mobo?
Gigabyte GTX 760 (or something that offers move value for money?)
OCZ Virtex 3 120GB SSD
1 x 2TB Seagate HDD
16GB Ram (2 X 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM)
Cooling (It's haswell after all)
Case(And a 750W PSU. Have not decided yet, but looking at a full chassis)

My issue is, I can't decide on a Mobo. what Mobo can I get that supports Duel channel ram, 2 Way SLI (Will most possibly never use SLI, but will be nice in case I decide to fall for SLI), SATA 2 and 3, USB 2 and 3, and has a overclocking facility? 4K for a Mobo is overkill, so preferably something between 1500 - 2500.

The "PC" will be used to play the odd game or two when I'm bored, a lot of programming, and to top it all off, a bit of Graphic editing (trying to learn), and the odd day to day tasks when need it be.

When you say "little PC", do you mean HTPC or was it just some word play?

MSI Z87 GD65 GAMING motherboard will be perfect with it's awesome red theme.
Your CPU is a bit overkill compared to your GPU, why not get a 4670K and a GTX770, games would be much happier!
Cooling depends on your budget (R500 or R1200?) or preference (air cooling or closed-loop water cooling?)

If you're looking for an awesome case, get the Cooler Master Trooper or Stryker!

Oh, just a pun.

Cooler master was the preference, just needed to look at a full chassis, but doesn't look like it'll be used properly. So far I'm looking at air cooling, but early next year I might go for closed loop water cooling (Corsair H100i) after I get sick of the air cooling.

Going to run a few VM's on it as well from time to time, for testing purposes.

What's the cost on that MSI Z87 GD65?

I already have the CPU, so really no point in getting an i5 :D

Get the Cooler Master Hyper 212 X for air cooling until you go water. Around R400.

Around R2800 (if you can find one)
There is also the MSI Z87-G45 GAMING for around R2200
And the GIGABYTE GA-Z87-D3HP for around R2000

The G45 doesn't loo too bad. Will it allow me to Over clock?
Yes, any Z87 motherboard will allow you to overclock your CPU, some boards (the more expensive ones) will allow for slightly faster overclocks if your CPU is up for it.

Then I only have the GPU left. What GPU is the best value for money? How much better is a GTX 770 than a GTX 760?

Edit - bad question. GTX 770 is way better.

My question is, what games will a GTX 770 be able to play? Will have issues playing Diablo 3 and similar games?

Any graphics card upwards of R2500 won't have any problems running games on High and 1080p. Good value for money cards are: GTX760, GTX770, PowerColor Radeon HD7870, PowerColor Radeon HD7950, RadeonPowerColor HD7970. PowerColor series are from Wootware.co.za. Rebeltech.co.za have specials on a GTX760 and GTX770.

The GTX770 is just a bit far to stretch your budget, IMO. A GTX760 will be more than capable. Keep in mind that the new Radeon GPUs will be here in a few (2-3) months.

What resolution are you running at or thinking of running at?

So far just normal 1080p (1920 × 1080).

Any of the cards mentioned above will be great for your setup then. Enjoy the new gaming experience!

Hmm seems Rebeltech is out of stock. Any other ideas? Or how long will it take them to restock?

Bios Online has it for R2702 with free shipping. I've noticed a number of stores out of stock. Probably about to be replaced by AMD.

Two questions:

1.Anyone know who sells the cheapest AMD FX-8350's ? Rebeltech is sold out :/

2. Is it worth it paying R600 extra for a HD 7950? (vs 7870)

EDIT: Oh, and are www.dc3.co.za reliable? Anyone bought from them?

What's the difference between these two motherboards guys? (using a FX-8320(might do a mild overclock) and HD 7870)

Asus M5A97 Evo AM3+ R1400
ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 AM3/AM3+ R1097

Is it worth the price difference?
