The PC Build Thread

Hi Guys. I need some advice on how to cool my rig down. It's summer time and the hot weather is causing havoc with my temps. My CPU is running idle at 51 degrees and it gets warm just by performing simple tasks, never mind gaming.

I've got 3 intake fans, one from the front and two from the side, and three exhaust fans, two up top and one at the back, but temps still won't come down...

Any advice? Water cooling is out of the question.

Anyone here have the Coolermaster N500 case? There are currently no reviews online for it :(

Just a shout out to EmileS! Thanks for the help with building my PC. All my parts arrived, and I finally managed to build it. Its flying! Now I only need a GPU and it will be done. I'll post a few images tomorrow of the system as is.

Whats yr rig? I run an asrock ex4 and i5-3570k @ 4.2Ghz and live on the east coast, coolermaster hyper 212 does a pretty decent job of keeping things cool.

East coast is crazy for high temps. It doesn't matter how many fans you have, you need a big case with lots of space inside for the air to move easily, and which is well vented. Oh, and obviously you need to keep it free from dust. I am a firm believer that a good quality metal gaming case will lengthen the lifespan of the components to the point where it probably pays for itself.

Space shouldn't be an issue, the only thing that will be installed on the HTPC is XBMC (still undecided about what OS to use, Linux or Win8). The microserver will still host all the content.
Sounds like a nice setup.

I'd try out Linux if I where you. Will be a massive learning experience to get everything set up.

:D

Glad I could help out mate! Post those pics so we can all see!

Edit: Have you decided on a GPU yet? R280X is great bang for buck at the moment, and will fit your budget nicely. Nvidia did massive price cuts on their GPUs, haven't seen the effects of that in SA yet, just 2 weeks or so and it will be here (I hope). Anyway, if you haven't decided, give a budget, and we can look at options.

I'll second the Hyper 212. I use the Hyper 212X and temps are nice and low under load.

You should consider closed-loop watercooling Gunner182. Why is it out of the question?

What case do you recommend under R800?

Keen to see some pics of your build.

Eish. I dunno. I have the CM HAF X, but it is expensive. The one I had before was an Aero cool PGS V Vx-E. Looked very cool, but didn't have much space inside and no matter what fans I put in, it would run hot.

A friend's PC got stolen out of his car and he asked me to suggest some components. Long story short I ended up having a meeting at Computer's Only and Carlo and I drew up a list of components. For R15k my friend is walking away with a beautiful Haswell GTX 760 system.

And for +/- R1k there is the beautiful CM 690 III. I would seriously recommend it, its a beautiful chassis and seriously good quality.

I am new to this thread, can we post up our current builds here?

You can, or you can put it in your signature. If you'd like us to comment on your friends PC, post the specs.

Been looking at that...need 5 HDD slots though but I suppose I could buy a 5.25 to 3.5 bracket.

Also been looking at Coolermaster HAF 912 Combat and Coolermaster N500.
HAF 912 Combat has enough for 5 HDD and more. N500 has the same amount (4) as the Corsair 300R, in which case take the latter.
There is also the Zalman Z9

I will just post up my system specs here, it would make my sig too cluttered. This thread is the kind of place where revealing my system specs would be appreciated.

I have two systems, and if you want to make a suggestion about something I would be very interested to hear.

1. Gaming rig
Intel Core i7-3770k
Gigabyte G1.Sniper M3
G.Skill RipJaws Z DDR3-2133 16GB
Gigabyte GTX 680
Corsair Neutron GTX 240GB SSD
WD Velociraptor 1TB
Seagate 1TB
WD 500GB Green
Corsair H80i (w/ 2x Noctua HF-F12 fans)
Gigabyte Odin Pro 800W
Silverstone Fortress FT03T
Windows 8.1 Pro x64

2. File server
AMD A8-5600K
MSI FM2-A85XA-G65
Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracers DDR3-1866 8GB
Kingston V+100 128GB SSD
Corsair CX500 500W PSU
Samsung 500GB HDD
Seagate 1TB
Seagate 2TB
Seagate 3TB
2x WD Black 1TB
Bitfenix Shinobi
Windows Server 2012 Standard

I want to upgrade the server's chassis to a CM Cosmos SE just because its so sexy but currently spending R2k on a chassis for a machine that just sits in the corner is not in the budget.

I have an Asrock FM2 Extreme 6 with an A10 5800K @3.8Ghz and a Hyper TX3. My temps seem to have come down today, it's still hot, dunno what happened. But last night I used a desk fan to blow right into my front 140mm fan, seemed to do the trick :D

I got a Scout 2, but with these hot temps I think even the best cases might get a little hot.

I've just ordered a new mobo/cpu/ram set - my Core2Duo doesn't seem to cut it anymore. For the upgrade I've gone with fairly modest parts, because frankly I don't really have money to spend on this at the moment! This system is for general use and a fair amount of gaming - my existing GFX is a 7850.

New kit:
Mobo: ASUS H87M-E
CPU: Intel Core i5 4570
RAM: 2x 4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz

My question: Will I be fine with stock cooling? Or would you recommend throwing in a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, or even a cheaper Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO? I live in Cape Town - ambient temps are usually fairly moderate.
