The PC Build Thread

Hi

just wanted to get your guys' opinion on somethings. I would like to have a PC that can run games (easy on medium settings) and also do proper multitasking (Photoshop/Premier kinda thing) currently using a Fujitsu lifebook laptop with i3 (2.4Ghz, 3GB Ram), I want something a bit faster than this. So I've been looking at evetech and comx-computers, and these are the PCs I'm looking at:

i7 - R6k
http://www.evetech.co.za/Computer-systems/intel-core-i7-quad-core-custom-built-basic-desktop-pc-32.aspx

i5 - R4.9k
http://www.evetech.co.za/Computer-systems/intel-core-i5-quad-core-custom-built-basic-desktop-computer-156.aspx
I was thinking about getting the i5 and adding a graphics card and extra ram. What do you guys think? :)

*At most I am willing to spend about R6300

Neither option is all that great. Building your own rig is always better value for money.

What are your specifications?

Do you need a chassis, mouse and keyboard as well as a screen?

I can come up with something for you.

I have the keyboard and mouse, have a 19" LG LCD. Everything else is needed :D
Thanks man!

*Forgot specifications, uhm basic multitasking including photoshop and the odd premier use. Play games above 30fps on medium :D (currently on 21/24 on low settings with my Lifebook lol ), harddrive can be around 500GB, have an external where everything is kept.

**So I decided to do some looking around and this is what I came up with. Any problems with this setup/things you'd rather use instead please let me know. Decided to go with AMD since they were a little bit cheaper than Intel and also a bit faster. :) Thanks

Hi Guys

I am looking to replace my 7(!) year old pc in the next month or so (recently got a new PSU but that's all I will be using in the new build). My budget is around R 9 000 and I am looking at something similar to the R 9 000 build from http://www.nag.co.za/2013/12/10/system-builders-guide-december-r4500-r9000/.

Will there be a noticeable difference between the 4440 and a 4670k for gaming @1080p? I will probably never get around to overclocking. Are there any alternatives to the R 9 270x?

Or should I rather wait for the new AMD prosessors?

Thanks

CPU 2 most definitely.

None of the GPUs you mentioned will perform well in games. You should definitely look at something like the HD7770 and higher spec

There will be a slight deference in games when you take the 4670 over the 4440. Will also be very dependent on the game you play. Some games you will see a big difference, like WOT. The only alternative to the R9 270X I'll recommend, is the R9 270 (non-X). Gives you some more cash to get that better CPU.

4670 + 270 will be slower in 90% of games than 4440 + 270x. I reckon anyway.

True true. If gaming is all you do then yes. However, if I was him, I'll think of it in this way: Get the best CPU now, so I don't have to upgrade that in a year or 2 (or even 3) from now, then rather just upgrade the GPU to something bigger when funds are available again. Instead of upgrading both again in a year.

Is that because the HD7770 uses 128Bit and DDR5 and the HD6670/7730 DDR3? Other than the Graphics card, is there anything else that I should worry about? Thanks :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Going to try to get a 2nd hand 4670k or 3570k and then get the 270x. Otherwise I am sure I would be happy with the 4440 as this is a huge jump for me.

You'll be happy with the 4440. I have a 4570 and I've absolutely no complaints. But... why do you want a K-series chip, do you intend to OC? If not you're paying a premium for nothing.

Because if it has a K at the end it has to better right? I was initially planning on getting an i3 and from there it was just a few increments to the 4670k.... The 4570 is R300 more expensive than the 4440 at wootware, is this worth the extra cost?

It is better, if you intend to overclock. The K series is the only series capable of overclocking. There is the 4670 (non K) which has the same performance and is a bit cheaper than the K series.
