The PC Build Thread

Hi Guys,

I am looking for some assistance in building a new pc / upgrading my existing one.

Current setup:
Intel I7 - 2600 - 3.4GHZ CPU
Nvidia GTX 650
550 watt +- PSU (Realise I would need to upgrade this - suggestions on a good price vs performance psu would be appreciated)
8GB of Vengeance Ram
2 x 1TB Western Digital HDD's (1 green 1 blue)

What i'd like:
GPU:
http://www.wootware.co.za/galax-97nqh6dnb4tx-geforce-gtx-970-exoc-black-edition-4096mb-gddr5-256-bit-pci-express-3-0-desktop-graphics-card.html

CPU:
http://www.takealot.com/intel-core-i5-4690k-processor-3-50ghz-6mb-cache-skt-1150/PLID32732301 (otherwise possibly the 4GHZ I7 8mb cache, though not sure such a monster is necessary for gaming?)

An okay-ish motherboard? Any suggestions? Judging from the above post will a R1400 mboard suffice?

I have around +-10k-11k to spend.
That gfx card is a very good choice with good value for money.
Can't see the rest of your setup (check your post) but if you won't be overclocking that 550 psu might still do it.

Are you going to overclock?

Hi Goofball + Ponder,

No I won't be overclocking.

I was thinking about taking the rest of my setup and carrying that over with the new parts above, the only difference I guess will be to get 8 - 16gb's of new RAM http://www.takealot.com/corsair-vengeance-8gb-ddr3-1600mhz-module/PLID34158159 as opposed to my current 1300 RAM.

The HDD's I'll just carry over.

Is it worth paying the R3372 for that CPU? :D

Thanks again for the responses.

You're not going to overclock so no need for a K series CPU, get a non-K version.

You also don't need an expensive MB that does overclocking, an R800 or so MB will suffice depending on your requirements wrt sata ports, usb ports & pci slots. So what are your requirements port & slot wise?

Hi Ponder,

As long as I have space for a sound card and graphics card then I should be fine.

As far as USB ports go, I shan't need more than 3 - 4 in the back and 2 - 3 in the front. (Can always get one of those USB hubs if need be).

Have a look at http://www.takealot.com/msi-intel-h81-p33-atx-motherboard/PLID34158493 and see if it has enough usb & sata ports at your required speeds, has plenty of pci slots. Suspect it will suit your requirements.

The Galax 970 GPU you picked is great. Rebeltech had it on offer bundled with two games but they're out of stock according to their site, maybe just confirm with them.

So what else do you need?

Howsit Ponder,

Thanks again! :)

If I were to purchase a new Power Supply in the 650 Watt range +-, what would be a good option for that in price vs performance and do you perhaps know of any places which would allow me to pay off any items over time? As from what I see these places are usually all about total cost and not many places are for allowing credit.

You don't need a 650W PSU, that CPU+GPU at full load will be around 300W so a decent 500W PSU will be ample.

Sorry I'm not aware of any stores that provide credit facilities.

Takealot lets you pay over 12 months (or less) if using a credit card...that's the only one that comes to mind.

Does takealot provide the credit facility or is it the normal credit card thing where the CC company whacks you with some serious interest after 55 days?

No idea actually...very good question, Mr. P. - I would assume it's the worst case scenario.

I've only ever paid upfront and clear my card every month.

Hi Ponder + Neopod,

Thanks again for all the help, appreciated. I'm looking at acquiring the parts as soon as I verify all finances are in order. :D

No worries.

If I'm completely honest, I don't think a processor upgrade is worth the money for you - just my opinion. If you take a look at this - http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/cpu-charts-2015/compare,3710.html?prod[7426]=on&prod[7434]=on, you'll see the 3k you're going to spend is going to get you not a heck of a lot of difference in gaming performance.

Personally, I'd get the graphics card now and take a look at processors again when Skylake launches in the third quarter of this year.

Good advice, I did not even look at his current cpu :o

Prawnapple, just get the GPU for now ;)

Good day, gents!

I just built a nice new pc based on a 4790k and a GTX 970. Downloading Witcher as we speak...

However, my Samsung T240 has given up the fight, so I'm on my receptionist's screen at the moment, also 24" Samsung.

Any recommendations for a good gaming monitor? Price sub R5000, the cheaper the better, obviously. And what should I be looking for? I hear about things like G-sync, but I have no idea what's important or what some of it means.

Thanks.

Your best bet is probably Rebel Tech. Get the biggest monitor you can afford.

Nvidia charges manufacturers a lot for G-Sync functionality, so those monitors are expensive.
