The PC Build Thread

i'll def look into that.. im reading all other replies now and they all agree with you.

I would get some stuff off carbonite or perhaps everything but i want to get an idea of what build i will need so when i go searching i dont get sidetracked by awesome prices of other custom builds or components.. well if the components i need are priced relatively close to alternatives that are better then score..

Thanx Lament,

once again mate, you share some vital info.. i'll redo the build and see what happens with the budget. Kudos to everyone who also gave input but what you shared here really made me think about this for a sec, lol my gf is eyeballing me every time i tell her i wont change the build again cause i've got it down and then this happens hahaha

I mentioned elsewhere than I'm considering a new gaming rig, and ponder pointed me this thread. Budget is around R18K including the OS, but excluding a screen, keyboard, and mouse. I haven't paid much attention to hardware for the past few years, so I could use some advice.

I'm leaning towards an i5 6600K, 16 GB of RAM, two drives (one will be an SSD) and a 6GB GTX 1060. I can get it from Evetech within budget, but I'm having second thoughts after reading a recent thread (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...e-service-and-unfair-business-practices/page1). Wootware is supposed to be pretty good. I would like the supplier to assemble it for me though - it's been years since I did anything more than sticking additional memory into a notebook, and I don't want to take chances with shiny new toys. I definitely want to play Battlefield 1, GTA V, and whichever decent games are released over the next three or four years.

Your thoughts?

Will get back to you tomorrow, could probably do a build with gtx 1070.

Are you going to overclock?

I probably won't overclock, no. It would be great if I can somehow manage to fit a GTX 1070 into my budget.:D

R17 200 - TOTAL

Wootware will assemble and stress test for R300.

Alternative options:
R3500 - Intel Core i7 6700 I would rather get this than the i5 above, same pice.

EDIT: Sorry I forgot about the OS, do you want a retail or OEM copy? You can get a OEM Win10 Pro license key for about R500 from Kinguin or G2A which is a lot cheaper than a retail copy. The downside to OEM is it's tied to your MB/computer and you cannot later transfer it to a new computer, you also don't get MS telephone support. If you want a retail copy then we'll have to drop the 1070 for a 1060 to stay within your budget.

Wouldn't it be better to get a single 8GB RAM module and buy another later instead of buying two 4GB modules now?

MB has 4 memory slots, in this case I usually spec 2 dimms for dual channel. If it was a H110 MB I would have specced 1x 8GB seeing as it only has two slots.
If the OP thinks that he will be using more that 16GB ram in the future then he should rather get 1x 8GB stick now.

Also this looks like a nice bundle for OP:

Intel Core i7 6700 CPU + Asus B150M-A Mainboard + Kingston 16GB(2x8GB) 2133mhz Memory

Add in the PSU, case, SSD and HDD from Wootware it comes to R17132, just add HSF and OS.

Great, thanks ponder!

Will that i5 6500 be good for the next couple of years? I also that that the i7 might be the better bet. For the sake of future expansion, I'd probably also stick with 1 8GB stick for now, then I can up it to 32GB if I ever feel the need. I also never knew that you get get OEM copies of Windows for cheap - I was bargaining on around R2000 just for the OS. Getting that down to R500 leaves me with an extra grand and a half to spend on hardware, awesome! I'm not familiar with the Galax brand, but according the people of the interwebs their cards are pretty decent. I expected that I'll get an MSI or Asus card.

I would go for the i7.

If you see yourself using more than 16GB then ys 1x 8GB is the way to go.

Do you have Win7 by any chance, not sure but you might still be able to upgrade that to Win10 by using assistive technolgy option in order to upgrade if this is still working. There's also DAZ loader

Have you heard of the Galaxy & KFA2 brands? Both reputable & well know, Galaxy also has long history with nVidia & KFA2 was into high end 'niche' cards.

Galaxy & KFA2 merged and were gonna trade under the Galaxy brand name but a trademark dispute was lodged in the EU (think it was Samsung) over the use of the Galaxy name so now it's called Galax & KFA2 in other markets.

See http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2014/09/18/nvidia-partners-galaxy-and-kfa2-merge-to-fo/1

Here are two other options but they are more $$$
R7699 - Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 AMP ZT-P10700C-10P 8GB
R7799 - MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Armor 8G OC

I do, but it's an OEM version running on my laptop, so I can't install it anywhere else. It's been a while since I've done serious PC gaming, but the imminent release of BF1 was enough to revive my interest.

I'm now seriously considering waiting a while in order to add enough to my budget to get a GTX 1070. However, at the same time, I'm trying to decide if it's worth an extra R2500 - R3000 over a GTX 1060. Decisions, decisions...

What resolution are you gaming at? 1080p, probably not worth it, unless you want to future proof a bit. Anything above that - definitely! Very happy with mine.

Definitely a fair question. Nonetheless, I've decided to try and stretch the budget to a GTX 1070, even if it means that I have to wait a while. Based on comparisons that I've been watching online, it has a significant edge over the 1060. Also, I was thinking that I could (should I want to upgrade later) add another GTX 1070. The 1060, on the other hand, doesn't support SLI.

On that note, anyone have an opinion on the Gigabyte GA-H170-Gaming 3 DDR3 motherboard?
