The PC Build Thread

^, depending where you getting it from, I'd ask them to flash it before shipping it out. A Wootware would and Rebeltech.

Hi all
I want to build myself a new machine which will be my general home PC. It will be used for watching movies, streaming, general MS Office work etc, so nothing spectacular. My 7 - 8 year old machine with 2.5 dual core CPU and 3 GB DDRII memory is starting to show its age and needs to go.

I want to see if I can come in around R5k
I have a 2 TB HDD which I will put in it and I might also buy a new PSU, but I'm going to build it in to my old case.

Your opinions please, keep in mind I want to keep the door open to go up to 16 GB memory in future if needed, a more powerful i5 or i7 processor and I'll definatly also add a SSD at some point.
I'll never add a dedicated GPU, the on board will do just fine.

Is this a good motherboard, I see it even has USB-c and M.2 for a future SSD

And this CPU

In terms of memmory I'll be fine with 4 GB for now, but if budget allows I'll go 8 GB

or

I'm especially unsure when it comes to the RAM, so please chime in

The optional power supply

If there are cheaper power supply options I'll also look at those.

Thanks

If it's possibly to up your budget to ~R6k you can get yourself an i7 6700 + 8GB RAM + MB + PSU right now. That extra R1k can make a huge difference to your build.

Budget = possible, where is this machine for R6k, link please?

R3000 - Intel Core i7 6700 Processor
R1353 - MSI B250M PRO-VDH Intel LGA1151 B250 Kaby Lake Micro-ATX Desktop Motherboard
R1039 - G.Skill F4-2400C15D-8GVR Ripjaws V 8GB (2x4GB) 2400MHz DDR4 CL15 1.20V Red Desktop Memory
R651 - Corsair VS450 VS Series 450W Desktop Power Supply
R6043 - TOTAL

The CPU does not come with a cooler (oem tray) but the seller can usually throw in one for R100 if I recall correctly. Or you can buy your own. CPU is from the same person that operates this online store.
If you are not too hung up on the m.2 & 4x dimm slots we can pick a H110 MB and knock R270 off the MB price but then you will have to get a single 8GB stick if you wanna upgrade to 16gb later.

Looks good, just a question, I see that CPU only supports DDR4 2133 RAM and looks like we are putting in DDR4 2400, or doesn't that matter?

No, pointless buying 2133 ram if it's more expensive than 2400 ram, the 2400 ram will be downclocked to 2133MHz. You don't really see builds with 2133 ram, people just go for the cheaper 2400 as it works fine.

As long as it works with the CPU I'm happy.

Yes, all DDR4 is 2133Mhz. Modules rated higher just mean that they've been validated to work properly at higher frequencies, which is essentially just a memory OC.

As per above it's all good ;)

And I presume the fact that it's a Sky Lake CPU on a Kaby Lake mobo also doesn't really matter?
Also that RAM, I don't know the brand at all, is it good or are there better brands for not a lot more money? I also don't mind going with a single stick of 8 GB, as long as it's not a bad thing going with only a single stick, if it's actually better going with only a single stick, then I'll even pay more.

Kaby MB is backward compatible with Sky CPU so it's all good (As is Sky MB with Kaby CPU but requires a bios update in this case). You can verify that here, https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B250M-PRO-VDH.html#support-cpu

GSkill is a known brand, if you don't feel comfortable with it then look at the Corsair for R50 more. 2 stick are better than one as they run in dual channel configuration providing a bit of a performance boost in some scenarios. If you are going with that b250 mb stick to 2 sticks as it has 4x dimm slots so you can always add more ram later. If you go with the h110 mb then go with a single 8gb stick as it only has 2x dimm slots leaving one open for future expansion.

@ponder what do you think, I might as well go for this and add that i7 CPU for R3000 and add my own hard drive as well.
R3000 for the CPU and this build R3657 is slightly over budget, but then I have a new case, power supply, practically everything new.
http://www.wootware.co.za/wootware-waring-kaby-lake-office-desktop.html

I don't think that case has any front usb3 ports. The PSU is not that great (rated at 250W actually) but it will do the job. If you can live without front usb3 ports then it's fine.

That list is a bit confusing as I see an i3 cpu there as well as a R250 assembly fee?

I baught the i7 last night, that's really a good price, so I'll think about the rest, but probably going with the original spec you gave me.

Probably this one as you suggested in that other build thred.
http://www.wootware.co.za/raijintek-aidos-black-edition-92mm-pwm-fan-cpu-cooler.html

Must just make sure it fits in the chassis I choose, any ideas, something not too big and nothing fancy? USB3 on the front.

@ponder another question for you.
Won't there be any bottle necks between the mobo and the i7 CPU? http://www.wootware.co.za/msi-b250m...-kaby-lake-micro-atx-desktop-motherboard.html

In general, why are some motherboards so much more expensive? If I take the board in my link and compare it to MSI boards over R1000 more expensive, then I don't see that much of a difference in spec between sub R1500 boards and boards costing over R2500.
