In general, why are some motherboards so much more expensive? If I take the board in my link and compare it to MSI boards over R1000 more expensive, then I don't see that much of a difference in spec between sub R1500 boards and boards costing over R2500.

No.

That i7 cpu will perform exactly the same on your MB as it would on one costing R3k more. The more expensive MBs have more features, ports & slots usually. They will also have more beefed up power delivery circuitry for those people that want to overclock their K series cpus. You pay extra for all these things which in most cases are not required by the user.

Are you gonna put a dedicated gpu into the case at any point?

True. I just looked at their R999 mini-itx case and it's quite nice but then you have to get a more expensive MB.
 
Contemplating an upgrade but thinking of building my first AMD machine. Worth it or should I just stay with the tried and tested even if a bit more expensive by using Intel?

Depends what you're primary uses for the PC is. If it's purely a gaming PC then I'd go Intel, if you're going to be doing any other workloads that can scale nicely with cores (video encoding, rendering, development/compiling, etc) then go with the new Ryzen R7 1700 (or wait for the R5 1600X). The Ryzen processors are very good in games just not as good as Intel as basically all the current games are not optimized for the new AMD architectures - though in reality you probably will not notice any difference in gaming between the two.

Do you have any budget in mind and what components are you after?

95% of my PC usage at home is for gaming.

No real budget yet, just crunching a few things together trying to see what a good budget will be for a nice new up to date PC (Tower only)

In that case just get an i7-6700 from PotterH for R3k (maybe even less), gaming wise it outperforms any AMD cpu out there.

What's your current CPU? (Sorry I can't remember that far back)

I5 Haswell 4 series I think

Would also save me not having to change my Mobo. So I guess it would still work out cheaper even if I buy a brand new CPU as opposed to a CPU and Mobo

In that case you will have to get a i7-4790, PotterH had some listed for sale not too long ago, best to PM or whatsapp him.

I'm also looking at a i7-4790 but in no rush.

Was thinking the same. Thanks Ponder, I'll delay a complete rebuilt for now, just upgrade the CPU and maybe a new GPU.

@ponder that Mobo is out of stock and they don't expect stock soon, so I think it best I pick another one because the stock coming in a few weeks time will probably be much more expensive.
How about this one, it's skylake and not Kaby, but that's not a issue for me since that i7 CPU is also skylake, still does DDR4 and has 4 RAM slots, has a M.2 slot very important for the SSD I already own, it doesn't have USB-C like that previous one, but that's no biggy.

Should I go for it or is there something better in the same price range? It must have a M.2 SSD slot and 4 RAM slots.
