I have not yet measured the actual consumption yet but it is a concern. The power supply is a 750w so I'm pretty sure it might be too heavy, just weighing up options.
The noise is why I was thinking of moving it to a case where I could use bigger quieter fans.
Oooh you might have scored, that 750w was an optional extra and I'm pretty sure it's rated as 80 Plus Gold.

The noise might be an issue because the fans are small but run fast and if you unplug one of them the system won't boot.

You will have to Google some mods and have yourself a nice weekend project.

:)I had to google that, and yes it does have that sticker on. Just fiddling around with it at the moment but will connect it up to a power monitor and see what it uses in normal use.

Isn't that Xeon from roughly the same era as Core 2 duos? Also for RAM you're going to need to get ECC DDR3 memory sticks and that could be a bit pricey. I'm also not sure the motherboard would fit in a normal case as it's not ATX?

I'm getting my hands on some weird old NCR POS machines, apart from having loads of serial ports and a couple of 12V and 24V USB options (yikes!). The mobos seems to be 775 that can take Core 2 Quad CPUs. I never played around with intel so this looks like cheap fun.

Bottom line is I have to make room so slim PC (formerly ugly PC) needs to go. Want to get into AM4 for cheap, here's how.

Sorry if this is not the correct place to ask but I was wondering what your opinions are of upgrading from a MSI 1070 to a RTX 2060? PC is used for day to day work and then some gaming at 1440p. Currently have the non Ti 1070 and see Wootware have a sale on Palit 2060 for R5899 (not sure about the brand tho) and then also the Zotac 2060 for R6250. Or should I not even consider the upgrade?

Honestly, 1070 -> 2060 is just a side grade as far as I'm concerned. Yes, there are slight performance improvements, but not enough to justify buying a whole new card. For new builds, I'd say sure, go for it, though.

Don't get sucked into the RTX hype, either, especially if you're set on buying the lowest card in the range.

Thanks for the reply.

I just saw the prices were quite good. I've been considering upgrading from 1070 to either 1070ti or 1080 and the research I saw was the 2060 (in some cases) is only a few fps behind the 1080 and for the price second hand ones are selling for I could get a new 2060.

Gaming is done at 1440p and just thinking for newer titles the 1070 might struggle maybe?

I currently run a 1440p monitor as main and gaming then a secondary 1080p.

The RTX 2060 is about 15% faster then the normal baseline 1070, if it was the 1070ti then it would be far closer.

So should I not even bother going from 1070 to 2060? Would it make more sense going to the 2070 rather? It's about a R3k price increase which is quite a bit just not sure.

No. 2070 you'll have to ask yourself if the ~30% performance boost over the 1070 justifies the price.

If it was me I'd be looking for a used 1080ti on carbonite, same price as a 2070, huge performance jump.

That is what I was originally looking at but when I check online some reviews are saying the 2060 is better that 1070 so there I thought the 2070 would be better than 1080?

I will have a look online then and not bother with the 20series cards now.

They trade blows, 2070 7% faster on average.

Thanks for this.

I suppose the only logical thing would be to upgrade to the 1080ti from the current 1070 I am using and not even bother looking at normal 1080 or what you think?

Basically, it's about justifying the price:performance. 1080ti is the most powerful card of the previous generation (it's cheaper than the Titan, and better), and still holds its ground against the current gen cards. With a 1070ti and 1080, you're not really going to notice that much of a difference. With 1080ti, it's night and day.

Yip, go used 1080ti.

Thought as much. Well then won't focus on upgrading GPU unless I see a really good deal on a 1080ti.

Might turn to upgrading RAM - currently have 16GB (4x4GB) and need to get RAM for daughters PC so thought I can upgrade mine and give her my old RAM.

Was thinking of going with Trident Z for the off chance one day I switch to Ryzen (have heard this is the better RAM to use with Ryzen). Just wanted to check if this is the correct one: TridentZ

Why is this version so much more?

Ripjaws would work just as well and are about R400 cheaper :-). TridentZ's are prettier ;-) though in hindsight I should've gone for the Ripjaws.

I won't lie the "pretty-ness" seems worth it to me for only R400 :)

Are you saying you should have gone with Ripjaws for a reason or only to save the R400?

What do you call those screws/screw holes on the computer case that you mount your motherboard on?
One of my motherboard screws broke off into that and I also can't use a pliers to unscrew that socket thing. Not sure WTF it's called.
Anyone know how to remove that socket screw thingamajig?

Reason being, I want to rebuild everything into my case and also make sure that I don't feel that slight electric feeling when my skin touches the case. :P

Think it\s got to do with me not using plastic washers between screws ad mobo.

Standoffs.
