Don’t forget to add thermal paste on the CPU and also remove that CPU cooler plastic, lol

That plastic is there to protect the sensitive surfaces and to prevent the earth leakage from tripping. It should NEVER be removed!!

Morning peeps, stuff came yesterday. Too nervous to start doing anything till I've done a butt load of youtube vid watching/research. :D

Take your time and enjoy it without rushing. Read through the mobo/case manuals. If you can find a build guide using your specific case that would help a lot too. In my case the most nerve wracking part for me was actually installing the CPU air cooler, needed a lot more force than I thought. Would also recommend testing if the system boots up before you wire up everything in the case to rule out any faulty components.

Is that the Dell 2721dgfa monitor? Great monitor, have it as well you'll enjoy it.

Honestly the scariest prospect right now for me is handling the motherboard. I haven't even removed it from the box because I'm too scared of static or like my fingers might be greasy or something. I've just been staring at it. o_O

The monitor I got is Dell S2721HGF 27" - it's the 1080 one but it looks pretty awesome, best monitor I've ever owned.

Really glad you received everything.

If you’re not sure how to get everything together you can also go to places like Matrix, I think they can help you but with cost. Or you can ask a friend with experience to help you put everything together.

But honestly it’s not really much to do. You can do it by yourself.

You just need to insert the CPU on the board, put thermal paste on the CPU and then place the CPU cooler. Put the motherboard on the case. Connect the case cables and the PSU cables to the motherboard and switch on your PC

Yeah I want to do it myself, just scared of cocking up something but I think I can do it. I'll be relying on the MyBB community for some assistance.
Push comes to shove I can always ask some fellow Durbanite MyBBers for some hands-on help.

Your motherboard will be fine, these days they have a lot of protective circuitry and insulation to deal with static discharge, but touch something grounded before handling it and hold it on the edges. Same goes for GPU and ram.

The thing that really makes me sweat bullets with new builds is installing the CPU cooler. I never know how much force is enough and I always think I'm going to crack the motherboard or CPU. Be careful with screws because stripping a screw hole is a huge headache. Everything else though... it's like building Lego. Have fun!

Good thing you're cautious wrt static. The only way to be completely safe is to build on a wooden surface. With all of you on a wooden surface. No use standing on carpet with your PC on the table. Rather sit on the table just to be safe.
You should also be completely naked. Even underwear can rub and cause static electricity buildup, and even the smallest amount can properly fry a component.

I expect any photos uploaded to be tasteful, hiding the offensive bits. Like this:

Anyway, I'm also usually nervous when building a PC, and my first full build in 9 years took more than 2 hours as I read all the manuals, hid all the cables, figured out the GPU anti sag bracket and decided where to put my drives etc.

Then again, if she can do it, so can you (skip to about 10min to see the building)

I normally put the motherboard in first and then build from that upwards, but over the years I've been watching youtubers doing the CPU, RAM and such on the box first and then transferring it into the case. So last year on my second PC build for the year I did that and yeah it actually works.
Also it really is like putting Lego together, but it might be because I've been building PCs since the 1992.

Tiles work as well :-). But grounding yourself every so often isn't a bad idea and the case is metal so touch it before dealing with the mobo, touch it before putting it in.

With everything, including chair from Evetech and some stuff from Takealot I think it came to about R36K.
I haven't done a final tally yet, I don't want to depress myself just yet looking at costs. o_O

Understood.

Great to hear that you will help Elon Musk. How is business going?
