AMD's FSR isn't far off at the moment, so worth a look.Good suggestion.
From the benchmarks I've seen, it's a bit faster than the 3060, though you do sacrifice DLSS which may pay dividends in the long run.

Don't use WD blue. Get a cheap SSD doesn't have to be big and use a WD red or black for the other stuff. Just that the wd blue is a bit unreliable had to many failed and WD red is rock solid. Running a few of them for like 5+ years no issues and constant read and write on them.Laptop is getting slow, want to replace with a desktop. No gaming, but will be used for some graphics, CAD, animation etc. but I'm not too bothered about CAD specific GPU's here. A gaming card is fine. Budget around R10k (or is this unrealistic). Been a while since I took a proper look at prices. Don't need monitors.
So far I've got:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 wootware
MOBO: ASRock B450M Steel Legend AMD B450 wootware
RAM: G.Skill F4-3200C22S-16GRS Ripjaws 16GB wootware
PSU: Super Flower SF-750F14MT(BK) Leadex 750W wootware
SSD: Western Digital Blue 500GB wootware
Which brings me to R8k.
Case I don't care - something black & basic. And then I don't know whether I should buy a cheap GPU and hold out until there's a good deal on carbonite or something, or just bite the bullet on a mid-range card but it seems like R7k is about where it's going to land for something decent. Worth trying to cut price on mobo or some other item? Or is this config ok and I just need to decide what to do about GPU.
Was looking at full system prices on carbonite and eh - for what I'm gonna pay it kind of makes more sense to just get new components, even if it is slightly lower spec.

Wouldn't 2x 8GB work better with the Rizen?

Why not go for a NVMe rather than the SSD? It is the same price as the WD SSD but operates at 4 times the read/write speeds.
Muskin NVMe WOOTWARE
My son has basically the same spec machine i.e. Ryzen 1600, 16GB DDR4 3200, Gigabyte B450, SuperFlower 750 PSU and 500GB NVMe (all bought from Wootware). We added a 2060Super gpu and he plays all games on high settings on 1440/144hz.
Thanks for this and thanks for all the replies everyone!@SpleenPoker - this is from Wootware. If you shop around you might find slightly lower pricing, but this is generally the sort of PC you want to get.

I have to get a PC for work so I figured I'd do a decent gaming one at the same time. I can at least upgrade certain parts in the next year or 2 depending which falls behind first as I figured 1080p, 60fps at high might be unrealistic for 3 years but my 1060 + 6600k lasted me long(RIP).
I honestly can't decide between the 3060 or 6600 XT. DLSS definitely seems like a good bit of future proofing right there, especially in the 2 games highest on my list to play (CP2077 and RDR2). I'm considering a freesync monitor so not sure if it makes DLSS redundant or not. Now I have to look into AMDs SAM, which I hadn't heard about before. Hmmmm
Also, I was looking at this monitor:
AOC 24G2 24" Full HD (1920x1080) 144Hz 4ms IPS FreeSync Desktop Gaming Monitor - Wootware
Buy AOC 24G2 24" Full HD (1920x1080) 144Hz 4ms IPS FreeSync Desktop Gaming Monitor at Wootware with fast shipping & superb service.www.wootware.co.za
I'm not familiar much with variable refresh rates and 144hz but how would 60fps play if I locked the monitor to 60hz for certain games? Would I get the same experience as a 60hz monitor?
Thanks again all. Hopefully will be jumping back into the PC space soon!

Awesome, thanks!FSR works very well for upscaling to 4K and less well as you go to lower resolutions.
DLSS works much better for lower resulotions, especially on 1080p. Not that you would need it any time soon with a 6600XT, which is slightly faster than a 3060 according to reviews I've seen, especially at 1080p.

DLSS and freesync is completely independent from each other.
Monitor would perform fine with freesync, even at 144hz, as the refreshrate will match the framerate, as long as you don't dip below 48fps (afaik). With a 6600XT you would be close to hitting 144hz, so no need to worry.
Not far off but it's not as good.
Still, nothing wrong with the 6600XT and it's closer to his budget. Would be a good option to go for.
Awesome, thanks!
I'm curious but why AMD/5600x over the 11400f?
