I would like to up this as I am no long in the windows only devleopment enviroment. and I can use whatever Os i choose...

How would one setup an ubuntu distribution that is updates to new versions without haveing to reinstall ? .. Ub get updated far to often for me to do full-installs..

Is there a starndard way guys setup thier boxes ?

As a new release comes out, you can update your repo list then do a distribution upgrade. Then you won't have to reinstall.

But the download can be a bitch if you have a lot installed, unless you're on local. But at least you can keep your settings and installed applications.

Hi greggpb,

Another way would be to acquire an "alternate CD". It is still an official release by Canonical (Ubuntu). This is slightly different to the standard .iso and allows for a nice easy upgrade without having to re-install. You can download the alternate CD from the various sites, buy it from several online stores or get it for free:

Swing by UCT's upper campus and go to the computer science building.

They have a "Freedom Toaster" there, which is built into the wall and has a screen, like an ATM, and lets you choose a distribution and then insert a blank CD or DVD, and it'll burn it onto it for you. Free.

There is also an option to burn a large majority of the publicly available Ubuntu software onto six DVDs, so you don't need to keep downloading packages via Synaptic or apt-get.

Here's the software that's available on it:

Hope that helps.
