What PFSense packages are a must have for you.

So far the one's I use:

Avahi - To allow for mirroring across subnets with AirServer (Apple TV software replacement).
Cron - To schedule tasks
Darkstat - To Monitor network
FreeRadius2 - For auth
Iftop - Interface monitor for network monitoring
LightSquid - Reporting for Squid Proxy
Mailreport - To send mail reports and report on weekly activities on firewall
OpenVPN - To host an OpenVPN
pfBlocker - To block spammy countries from wardialing / malware / hurting my network
Squid3-dev - To allow for http / https filtering
vnstat2 - For displaying network traffic.

Any other I missed that people can't live without?

Mine is very clean at the moment, our new office firewall that is:

Will pfsense still work if it goes through a switch?

My setup is: router --> Switch --> server

My router is on the other side of the house which runs to a switch and that switch connects to my server where i plan to install pfsense.

Yes, it will still work.

Why SARGE over say LightSquid? or SquidGuard over say Diladele proxy aka QLProxy?

Any particular reason?

LightSquid always bugs out for me after a while. I use Squidguard because I know it and I don't need anything more than what it already offers.

Hi Guy's
Please can you assist in advising on setting up open vpn on pfsense 2.15
I have I am also using viscosity/ tunnilblick, and no joy.
I have setup a CA, then then the server cert, and then the user cert (under user management)
I have tried on numerous occassions, to no avail :(
Please can you help.

Hi,
I want to set up a network like this:
pfsensesetup.jpg
An old Marconi Telkom router (acting as the modem -- more stable than my DSL-2750U) connected to an laptop running PFSense, which connects to DSL via PPPoE through the modem. It then shares that connection via WiFi (laptop only has one ethernet port) to the DSL-2750u to extend the WiFi range.

I tried this setup already with Windows on the laptop: connected via PPPoE through the modem, then shared the connection via netsh wlan hostednetwork. Trouble is that I don't know how to repeat the WiFi using the DSL-2750U in bridge mode -- I think you have to use ethernet with DHCP disabled. Is there a way in pfsense of using only one ethernet cable, from the laptop, connected to a switch which sends the data only to the router from the laptop? Also, that would allow for the laptop to be turned on via ethernet.

Thanks :)

Dunno how old that laptop is but if it was me I would use a usb/pcmcia etc ethernet adapter to get a second port going to the wifi router. Would be much more stable, I'm not a big fan of wifi.

Aight I have bought a USB -> ethernet adapter, set everything up, but the DHCP server doesn't seem to be working through the router (with DHCP turned off on the router). Also, my WAN (going to modem) is set to PPPoE, and the LAN (going to router) can't seem to connect to that even with the default gateway set to the WAN, not LAN.
Oh, also, how do I configure so that when ethernet is active it turns itself on automatically?

EDIT: PPPoE was the problem. Now using PPPoE on the modem instead of the pfSense WAN. Working like a charm.

Alright, I have set up basic shaping using the wizard, how can I prioritise my raspberry pi over the rest of the network (aside from gaming)?

Anybody have any luck with the new 2.2.3 version of PFsense and Squid3? I tried to google it a bit (the last 2 days actually) and just cannot get this working right. From what I can gather there is some issue with the freeBSD10 kernel and squid (yes I'm noob :D) . I actually had it up and running yesterday and even had https filtering working in transparent mode, this morning I reset the firewall just to test and now I'm getting a million issues again.

I've tried most suggestions - including the command line setups, manually creating squid directories, etc

Anybody have any insight or a working config for this?

Thanks.

Hey guys,

so instead of creating another thread thought i'd just bump this as its the pfsense thread :D
Okay so this is my first time delving into the realm of PfSense and setting it up.
Quick question on hardware, I have a spare i5 3570 , 8gb ram sitting around.

It will mainly be used as a transparent proxy + firewall including all the monitoring and shaping that goes with it. We have about 30 users on the network.

Overkill or is it good that have that kind of horsepower just incase?

Likely overkill, but in the wise words of our great leader, more is more better.

:P
