Porsche continues to achieve high levels of performance over the long term. The new Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid sees the sportscar manufacturer launch a plug-in hybrid model as the flagship of a model line for the first time. The four-litre V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo is combined with an electric motor, resulting in 500 kW/680 hp of system power and outstanding power delivery: Even when just above idle speed, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid offers an 850 Nm of torque. That means it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h. The boost strategy of the all-wheel drive Panamera comes from the 918 Spyder super sportscar. In the New European Driving Cycle, the average fuel consumption is 2.9 l/100 km, and the new flagship Panamera can drive on fully electric power for up to 50 kilometres. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid underlines the high importance of electromobility to Porsche.

Unique drive concept with V8 engine and electric motor

After the successful début of the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, which uses a V6 engine together with an electric motor, Porsche is showing once again that hybrid technology has great performance potential. The new Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid combines an electric motor (100 kW/136 hp) with a V8 engine (404 kW/550 hp). The decoupler installed in the Porsche hybrid module is actuated electromechanically by an electric clutch actuator (ECA), just like in the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. The result is short response times and a high level of comfort. As in all other second-generation Panamera models, the fast-shifting Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) with eight gears is used to transmit the power to the standard adaptive all-wheel drive system Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The E-Performance drive accelerates the luxury saloon to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and provides extraordinary tractive force at higher speeds. Combined with a top speed of 310 km/h, this means that the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid sets yet more new benchmarks in its class. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid comes with air suspension as standard and offers a unique balance in this segment: the comfort of a luxury saloon paired with sportscar-level performance values.

2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid revealed

Porsche has unveiled a second plug-in hybrid Panamera with a 671bhp V8 petrol engine; on sale this July costing £137,140

Porsche has revealed a second plug-in hybrid Panamera.

This V8 version joins the V6, both of them petrol, and it’s unusual not only for the substantial 671bhp it develops but also for being the first hybrid to serve as the ultimate model in a Porsche model range. The Turbo S also offers usefully more performance and considerably greater economy than the conventional 543bhp V8 Turbo.

It will officially travel 31 miles and deliver 97mpg on the (unrealistic) NEDC test cycle, and puts out 66g/km of Co2. In reality, says Panamera model-line boss Gernot Dollner, it travels 24 to 27 miles on amperes alone, and returns between 22 and 40mpg – not bad for 2310kg car of spectacular performance.

The spectacle comes from the Turbo S’s 543bhp 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 and 134bhp electric motor to produce a resounding 627lb ft of torque from as low as 1400rpm. The electric motor and clutch pack are compactly housed within the casing of an eight speed PDK transmission that drives all four wheels.

The result is a four-seat plug-in hybrid that will break 62mph in only 3.4sec, bound from that speed to 124mph in 8.3sec and top 193mph, making this the most powerful hybrid saloon in the world, says Porsche, and the fastest. Faster still, though, is Tesla’s pure electric 525bhp, 713lb ft Model S, which storms 62mph in 2.8 (unachievable, in Autocar’s experience) sec.

Key features include four driving modes – electric, hybrid, sport plus and boost, which provides a momentary extra power surge – 48-volt electrics to drive the electric anti-roll bars, optional four-wheel steering, torque vectoring, carbon ceramic brakes, three-chamber air suspension, Porsche traction management and launch control.

The battery pack needs six hours to charge from a 10amp domestic socket, or 2.4 hours from a 30amp supply using an optional 7.2kW charge

As with other hybrid Porsches, this Panamera’s driveline is configured to allow it simply to coast when the accelerator is released, energy recuperation occurring only under braking. Much effort has been invested to maximise the conversion of kinetic energy, and preserve electric range.

Dollner says that this is the most complex roadgoing Porsche yet engineered, offering no less than 6000 individual customer control options, and containing 100 million lines of computer code. An airliner carries a mere 10 to 15 million lines.

The Turbo S goes on sale this July costing £137,140.

New Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid has serious power...

Porsche recently took the covers off its Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and the world seemed quite impressed with its 340 kW power output. But now the high-end German performance manufacturer has taken its luxury saloon one step further and added this hybrid system to its Turbo S variant.

And, this hybrid tech in conjunction with the turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 allows the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid to serve up a whopping 500 kW and 850 N.m of torque. The results are a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 3,4 seconds and a top speed of 310 km/h.

Power is delivered to all four wheels through the brand’s eight-speed PDK transmission, while an electric clutch actuator services the 100 kW electric motors. Air suspension is a standard feature on this model.

From an economy point of view, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid boasts a claimed average fuel consumption of just 2,9 L/100 km and can run in EV mode for up to 50 km. The battery, meanwhile, can be fully recharged in a claimed 2,4 hours.

The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid will debut in Geneva in March, before being launched globally in the second quarter of this year … with ceramic composite brakes, dynamic chassis control, torque vectoring and progressive steering as standard equipment.

Germans will be paying around R2,5-million for this super saloon, while local pricing has yet to be announced.

Combining the 4,0-litre V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo with an electric motor, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid produces a whopping 500 kW and 850 N.m. This results in a claimed acceleration time from zero to 100 km/h of just 3,4 seconds and a top speed of 310 km/h.

With a fully electric driving distance of up to 50 km, the average fuel consumption figures comes in at just 2,9 L/100 km.

If you’re keen, Porsche says the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid can be ordered locally now, with first deliveries starting in the fourth quarter of 2017. The four-door luxury sedan will also be available as an Executive version, with a wheelbase extended by 150 mm.

Standard equipment includes ceramic composite brakes, the brand’s Dynamic Chassis Control Sport, adaptive aerodynamic elements, a three-chamber air suspension system and 21-inch alloy wheels in the 911 Turbo Design. The Executive version is furthermore equipped with rear-axle steering as standard.
