Private sector stepping in as Eskom collapses

The private sector is slowly replacing Eskom — not because of government policy but due to the power utility’s inability to serve the country’s energy needs.

Eskom’s collapse has seen load-shedding increase from 192 GWh in 2018 to 19,794 GWh in 2023.

Actually ironic seeing as how at one point they wanted to nationalise everything and due to the inevitable ****up that is the ANC it just pushed everything more to privatisation.

Ironic indeed.

Their incompetence and stupidity has never been a hurdle to their aspirations of supposed grandeur and splendor. African style of course, where every failure is heralded as a great success.

To add more food for thought is the amount of revenue, via extra fuel tax and levies that are being brought in to State coffers caused by this Government's inability to keep the lights on.
Just one company, Shoprite, R1.3 Billion @ 30% GFL/ RAF levy. It all starts adding up bt, and they still say they haven't got money.......

Almost everywhere I look these days, I see solar panels. When I got my system in 2020 - I was probably the only one in my suburb. Now just about every third or fourth house has panels.

The big malls and shopping complexes have panels covering all available roof space.

In typical SA fashion; government can’t provide basic services so private sector picks up the load.
 
Policy? If anything there was a policy to stand in the way of alternatives thus far. It's the story of the Telkom monopoly transition to competitive broadband all over again.

People should make their peace that whether they like renewable energy or not - They will be using renewable energy here in the not too distant future - Or nothing. Because there will be nothing else.

The ANC doesn't have what it takes to even have coal or gas power as viable concerns in the country. Basic ****, but still too much for them. It's simply too much Big-Though and Big-Talent effort. Which they don't have enough of. All their talents are geared for simple mafia/patronage bs. Stuff people could and did do perfectly well thousands of years ago - Because it's basic social instinct stuff. No intellect nor philosophy required.

Be careful.

Private means no State involvement in the market.

That includes - most crucially - quality control/vetting/licensing. Think about what it means to be an industry gatekeeper.

I think what tptb want us to do is to look passed the very real threat to the middle-class, that is public-private partnerships.

These are NOT private. If you need to get permission from someone - a State agency - before you can serve your community, that is not private commerce. That is a mixed economy.

The ANC is a lot smarter than a lot of the MC thinks.

The ANC's incompetence is an 'understanding'. It is required.... for the green agenda to take place.

None of it is necessary. Were it not for outside interference, in encouraging the ANC to take huge loans in return for taking 'the best international advice,' that puts foreign interests in control, I'm pretty sure we would have been back to a fully operating sustainable (coal-fired) electricity grid, years ago.

Well as everybody will find out through their pants eventually, this is going to be an unaffordable little game being played, the oppetunists as well as the communists will find this out. Electricity is not a game today, and if too expensive, it will ruin any monetary system exponentially from the inside out after the party & funfare is over.
Unfortunately the human race needs this experience it seems.
