The problem with ADSL

This is just an Afrihost punt. If I'd read that in the title would never have wasted time clicking through.

The problem for me is the double line rental.

Still waiting for fibre, so will have to stay with DSL for now

For fibre, the main challenge was the “rate of roll-out”. This is “dependant on lengthy council approval processes"

“A government intervention to fast-track this process could help to speed up installations and get more people onto fibre, which could relieve some pressure on Openserve’s DSL infrastructure,” said Afrihost.

The real problem with ADSL in the long term is the upload speed. If you need a decent upload speed, you're fooked. 1MB is, and probably always will be the limit for ADSL due to hardware limitations.

Even on the highest speed VDSL, the imposed limit is 3MB. 3MB is a fairly reasonable upload speed for most people's needs, but you have to pay for a 40MB service to get it. This assumes that the 40MB service is even available in your area.

VDSL upload limit is 16Mbps. VDSL2 is 100Mbps in both directions.
