Boucher got 3 x 100's in his first 20 or so tests and averaged 40 odd.
He saved a few games for us.

So Pothas didn't stand a chance after that.

I think Boucher was better than Palframan in all aspects. The one that lost out was Nic Pothas. He was the much better batsmen but touch and go on the 'keeping.

EDIT: Just checked their First Class stats.

Boucher: 2.44 dismissals per innings; 33.34 batting average
Palframan: 2.01 dismissals per innings; 24.55 batting average
Pothas: 1.94 dismissals per innings; 40.85 batting average

Boucher would have been playing with better bowlers on his team (so more chances generated, generally). But also batting against better bowlers on average.

So basically, the numbers are only half the story (as is usually the case).

More than a few...

He also had a monster top 5 later on in his career so it makes sense that he didnt score as many tons (30 odd 50s tho) . He obviously wasnt a Gilchrist or a Sanga, but then again he didnt need to be, but he he surely was more capable than his average of 30.

Comes back to what i said about opportunities. That said, boucher was an absolute soldier for Smith. those guys were and still are fiercely loyal. Imagine how much confidence these guys took into games knowing that their spots were never under threat, as opposed to other players in the team.

We all love to eat the burger but we dont wanna see the patty get made neh?

The boucher pothas decision was made long before smith had even played first class cricket. It was a decision made under cronje,woolmer and co.

Just a note, the stats I pulled were for First Class (domestic) matches. Now I don't remember who were the strongest domestic sides of the late 90s/early 2000s, but I'd imagine in terms of who they were playing against it would've been much of a muchness, so it is a fair way to at least comparing batting stats.

Domestic cricket was fun back then, Boland was strong in 98-99 but sadly lost to WP in the SuperSport series Final. 2003-2004 Easterns had a great team: Andre Nel, Andrew Hall, Daryll Cullinan, Zander de Bruyn, Sven Koenig, Johann Louw, Geoffrey Toyana, Andre Seymore, Albie Morkel. Bold player played for South Africa. In 2000-2002 EP has a mean bowling attack: Monty Hayward, Garnett Kruger and Mfuneko Ngam. If we look at keeper stats in the late 90's most keeper average around the mid 20's in First Class cricket. The only keeper that score lots of runs was Pothas and Errol Stewart. We talk about Pothas but Stewart was a great keeper and good batsman, very unlucky not to play test cricket. Steward is the only professional to win Rugby Currie Cup and Cricket Supersport Series/Currie cup.
 
Don't see a dedicated 4 day thread, but I see that Kyle Verreynne is plundering a big score against the Warriors; 178* at Tea on Day 2. I wonder how much time The Cobras will give him to get to the double ton before declaring.

Philander before Prince for an extra bowling option. It would allow Polly to move up. I'd then look at Klusener and KG as the extra 2.
Cullinan though? Not a chance. Horrible against the Aussies with an attitude to boot. I'd rather put ABD up to 5 and include Boucher. Otherwise a solid choice there!
 
Heinrich Klaasen and Lara Goodall have been awarded their first national contracts by CSA, with Klaasen replacing Faf du Plessis and Goodall included with an additional women's contract becoming available. With 16 men and 15 women contracted, the board has also left open the possibility for anyone selected in the national teams in the 2021-22 season to be upgraded to a central contract.

du Plessis, who retired from Test cricket last month but remains available for white-ball selection, has not been recontracted by CSA. That will leave him free to pursue opportunities in T20 leagues around the world, and he will remain eligible to play for South Africa at upcoming ICC events. His contract has gone to Klaasen, who captained South Africa's second-string T20I side in Pakistan, and has been part of the white-ball squads.

Goodall, who played a starring role in South Africa's series win against India, will get additional funds, as CSA prepares for several upcoming world tournaments.
