What better option was there?

Markram not proven, Keshav is not always certain to play depending on conditions and Bavuma has been the most consistent test batter in recent times.

None, I am totally on board with this. I'm the biggest supporter of Bavuma the test batsman since he came back from being dropped in 2021.

I am just mad that those damn Aussies aren't helping us get to the WTC final right now.

Tbh, we aren't really on par with the best anymore. I don't think it's totally the fault of CSA either. The ICC has also screwed everyone bar the "big three" over. England still do bad at times despite the privileges they get.

We can still beat them in the odd game here and there but we won't be able to dominate them over a longer period of time.

The best case scenario is that hopefully we can remain stable. With a bit of luck here and there, we can still win a major tournament.

This is a potentially controversial opinion but while I think AB was a once in a generation talent (who would shine even if he played today), I'm not sure guys like Amla or Kallis would, at least in the white ball formats (and I'm not trying to take away what they achieved, both are legends).

The game has evolved and their strike rates would frustate most coaches. We also saw how both struggled at the end of their careers in shorter formats. While age was a factor, I think the evolution of the game also played it's part there.

TBF Kallis was a product of circumstances. For the first half of his career he had to carry a batting lineup that was more often then not 100/5 in test cricket and in odi cricket he was asked to play the anchor role cause no one else was good enough to do it.
It is very difficult to change mentality later in your career after you have been conditioned to play a certain way. It wasn't a lack of ability to play the shots, I believe he still holds the fastest SA test 50.

As for amla I don't see why he is included here. His t20i strikerate was 132 and ipl strikerate was 142. His issue was that on certain grounds he would struggle to find the boundary outside the powerplay.

AB was given licence to go bos everytime he went out to bat. Amla and Kallis not so.
Having that freedom enables the type of expression that we were able to enjoy from AB.

Edit: of course players have to play the situation, but more times than not, Amla and Kallis were steadying the ship while AB was the one filling its sails, so to speak
 
I see Mpitsang has been booted as a selector. That would also explain why there's suddenly some direction in the selections.

Guys online pick on his no of hundreds but it's much better to have a guy who consistently gets 30-50 as Temba has been doing than someone who scores a hundred every 6 or so innings and fails the rest of the time.

Boucher also only had one ODI ton (against Zim as well when they were going through crisis) and Rhodes only had like 2 so Temba isint the first to be in a situation like that.

He also would have had a few more hundreds had it not been for bad luck (i.e battng with the tail or declarations). They declared a few times when he was 50+ IIRC during Faf's days.

To be realistic, Bavuma's name will never come up when we talk about the best middle order batters of this generation, but in the context of the current South African team, he's the man for the job.
 
Can't remember, did he captain the local Sunrisers franchise in the SA20? That would have done his credentials no harm whatsoever.
 
I don't think it quite qualifies as a first class game, but the Brevis kid made 50 against WI in their warm up game.
