CSA ANNOUNCES PROTEAS CONTRACTED SQUADS FOR THE 2026/27 SEASON

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today announced the Proteas Men’s and Proteas Women’s contracted squads for the 2026/27 season.
The Proteas Men’s squad has 18 contracted players with an additional hybrid contract, in a season where the Test side will continue its ICC World Test Championship title defence and the One-Day International (ODI) team builds towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 on home soil.
Hollywoodbets Dolphins seam bowler Ottneil Baartman and Momentum Multiply Titans all-arounder Corbin Bosch have earned their maiden national contracts, alongside batters Matthew Breetzke (Dafabet Warriors) and Dewald Brevis (Titans).
Titans spinner Simon Harmer has been awarded a hybrid contract.
This season will see the introduction of Players of National Interest (PONIs), a group of Division 1 Men’s players identified as part of the national succession pipeline across all formats for international and South Africa A tours.
On the women’s side, DP World Lions wicketkeeper batter Karabo Meso has been awarded with her first national contract after featuring in all Proteas Women’s tours in the last 12 months, including last year’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2026 in India.
Previously contracted players who do not form part of these squads do remain available for selection in men and women bilateral cricket and ICC events.
Director of National Teams and High Performance, Enoch Nkwe commented: “These groups of players have been recognised for their performances and contributions over the past 12 months, while also taking into account the upcoming international schedule.
“With a busy and significant season ahead for both the men and women, it remains important that we continue building depth and strengthening our pipeline with PONIs, while remaining competitive at the highest level. We believe these groups give us a strong base to do that.
Convenor of Selectors for the Proteas Men, Patrick Moroney added: “Our Road to 2027 and Beyond strategy also informed the final choice of players who possess the level of talent and attitude required in achieving our strong ambitions of winning all major ICC events going forward.”
Convenor of Selectors for the Proteas Women, Clinton du Preez said: “Contracts reflect a clear and deliberate focus on retaining a strong core of players who have driven the team’s recent performances and competitive progress. This approach ensures continuity, stability and sustained on-field standards, while reinforcing confidence in the current group. At the same time, there is a strategic commitment to building depth by creating opportunities for emerging players, ensuring the squad remains competitive, adaptable, and well-positioned for long-term success.”
The contracts run from 01 June 2026 - 31 May 2027, a period which includes bilateral home tours for the Proteas Men against Australia, Bangladesh and England, as well as an away tour to Sri Lanka next year.
The Proteas Women’s schedule is headlined by the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 to be played in England in June, along with inbound tours against India and Australia later in the season.

Feels like we’re stuck in that same Proteas cycle again tbh.
We’ve got exciting young guys coming through (Maphaka, Pretorius, Stubbs, etc.), but then we still lean heavily on the same core and wonder why things feel stagnant. The talent pipeline is actually there — the question is whether we’re brave enough to back it consistently.
At the same time, the scheduling doesn’t help either… waiting ages for home Tests and then trying to build a proper red-ball team is basically impossible. You can’t talk about a serious Test side if they barely play together.
The question is do we go full transition (pick youth and accept short-term pain), or keep the experienced core and try squeeze one proper WTC push out of them?
