The Punk Rock thread

Sham 69 - Hurray up Harry

We need some Pistols to balance things out in here...

Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK

I'm just realising just how many old classics have been covered and probably been made more famous by other bands...

Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love

Think it's time for some 21st century punk music...

I think "punk" really lost its edge in the last 2 decades or so and a lot of it seems more like pop-rock to me without any of the aggression and social dissatisfaction that made punk what it was originally.

I reckon you need to be looking at the harcore, crust and d-beat (and their variants) bands today to keep that spirit alive.

It's actually something I thought about when I wrote the OP because the term is pretty general and of course the scen has evolved through a few generation of bands and fans.

The mid to late 70s stuff sure looks pretty tame and pop like now, but when I was a lad it was a revolution like none other. We were all rebels at school listening to stuff that would probably be seen as tame nowadays.

But that is of course down to influence and the next wave take it onboard and change it again. I remeber the first time hearing Green Day for example, I thought for a long time they had just copied Stiff Little fingers sound and refined it a bit. I was so pleased when I heard the same comparison in High Fidelity when John Cusack was trying to chat up Sara Gilbert :)

So yes, it's each to his own as we all start from a different viewpoint. The definition for me has always roughly been that it's music that is made by people who love music for music's sake. Not just to make money.

Do you feel like that about all the videos I posted, or just in general?

I don't really know any of the bands you guys are posting but there is certainly a sound from the US that seems to have stuck around since about the times of early Green Day and Weezer.

So the comment about the last 20 years is probably stretching back a bit further imo, but good grief, it's sounds good and is a breath of fresh air compared to the schyte that classes for pop music these days.

Anyhoo, back to the choons and local is lekker...

Super jealous, would love to see the Pixies live.

The outro to "No.13 Baby" might be one of my fav pieces of music. No flashy riffing, no technical flair, just beautiful, considered layering and textures...

Wow. So lucky man... I still pump Pixies in the car. Awesome band!

My wife tried to organise tickets to a Fields of the Nephilim concert in the UK for my 40th 3 years back - but it ended up being a bit pricey.

Have to see Carl live before I die (or he does).

Funny you should say that, I was friends in London with a guy from Durban who over stayed his visa because Nirvana were going to play. Alas, Kurt never made it :(

Doolittte must be in the top 3, if not the top, played albums ever throughout my life. I still play it regularly.

Yep, there is simply no one like The Pixies. Pure awesomeness.
