Eyewitness News understands the man who committed suicide by jumping off Table Mountain over the weekend may be the same man who made headlines in 2010 when he donated a R1.5 million vehicle to car guards.

It is believed Rob Taylor took the cable car up the mountain on Sunday before plunging to his death.

Table Mountain National Park and Wilderness Search and Rescue workers struggled for hours to remove the man’s body on Sunday night. Police were called to investigate a short while thereafter.

His relatives have yet to identify his body.

A recorded message on the property developer’s cellphone now informs callers that the number is no longer in use.

Officers identified the philanthropist through a credit card they found on his body, but Cape Town police said a family member is expected to formally identify his body on Monday.

The police’s Ezra October said at this stage they are treating it as suicide.

“It is unclear why the man jumped. He jumped from right underneath the cable car area,” he said.
Taylor made several Table Mountain car guards happy and rich in 2010, when he donated a luxury vehicle to them.

It is believed he had tried to commit suicide once before.

How selfish. He could have at least made a few donations to me before jumping.

I thought it was required to inform family before releasing his name?

Giving away your material possessions is one warning sign of suicide ...

Giving an R8 to a bunch of homeless and/or unemployed bums is rather indicative of not having control of all your faculties. Doesn't surprise me in the least if true.

I read the headline as eight rand instead of an Audi R8. That makes a big difference! Heck who tips a car guard R8?

I'd guess he may well have gave the R8 away for attention, perhaps he wanted us(the public) to know something?

It's also very ironic that it just also happened to be on the same location on where he gave the R8 away.

What is he saying?
