The rand is in trouble

The rand and other emerging-market currencies could still weaken if the US Federal Reserve raises interest rates‚ even if such a move has been expected for some time‚ Moody’s said.

You go Rand. Don't let them bigger currencies bully you!
And always carry a knife.

Guys you will look at the R13.50 and see these days as good times.

to some extent SA” in which severe domestic challenges had contributed to exchange rate and financial market instability‚ and where “policy room to buffer external shocks and protect growth is less robust”.

The real crux of the matter. Viva ANC!

No interest rate hike. So the Rand stays at it's decade high of 13-odd for now.

When is the Rand not in trouble....
The troublesome Rand is such common news now I am losing interest

Heard both sides of the story. Some economists say it will weaken further, others reckon it will drop back to R12, or even lower. The opinion that fair value for the ZAR is around R10.00 to the USD. The fact that US didnt raise interest rates will count in emerging markets favour big time.

True story, I remember complaining when it was R8 to the dollar. Now R8 to the dollar would be amazing.
I remember seeing headlines about the R9 pound.
It hurt, we were importing parts for a boat from UK.

i'm wondering what the point of living in Sa is these days. Don't get me wrong, i think if u earn above a certain point it matters less but it seems to me Sa is a nice place to retire in, not to spend your active working life in because we earn way too little to keep up vs earning potential in $. Now if u earn $ and retire here then..

Pretty much my plan of action. Starting to wonder whether SA is the best option for retirement though....if they sort out the crime then it certainly will be at/near the top of the list. Until then other options are looking good too.

No - Rand must weaken

Weak Rand - Chinese imports get a bit expensive - means local is cheaper, means more production on shore and ..... oh wait .... forgot strike season .... can that idea.

going to update my online freelancing profiles exchange rates seems like it might be worth it again
