“A team within Nokia had Android up and running on the company’s Lumia handsets well before Microsoft and Nokia began negotiating Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s mobile phone and services business, according to two people briefed on the effort who declined to be identified because the project was confidential. Microsoft executives were aware of the existence of the project, these people said.”

“Getting Android to run on Nokia’s hardware was not a Herculean engineering effort, according to the people familiar with the project,” the NYT continues.

Interesting... wonder if Android Nokia phones will sell better than M$ Nokia phones? :D

Might have been worth it. Guess Nokia was planning on sacking Windows Phone, just like everyone else.

On a side note:

Guess you buy a Lumia to run windows phone. As a matter a fact, I wanted a Lumia till last week. Since this new evil Microsoft deal, I'll rather stick tot he Android route, as I'm getting just what I want. Now the wait begins for the Nexus 5...

I think Nokia phones would be selling better if they ran on Android. Its such a pity, I really would have really appreciated an Android Nokia phone.

Can you add the option, I'll take a Nokia with Windows Phone any day over one with Android?

If Nokia gave MS a good boot in the backside, got rid of W8 and go Android, then yes, but not all conditions are met - so no from me at this point in time.
