Dacia Duster Pickup Officially Confirmed For 2019 Launch

Romania's budget SUV will spawn a utilitarian version that won't be linked to the Renault Oroch.

Wait, doesn’t the Duster-based pickup truck already exist? The images you see here are of a custom version engineered by local coachbuilder Romturingia. In other words, this is technically not an official Dacia product. However, all this is about to change as Dacia’s parent company Renault has revealed the Duster pickup has entered the homologation process and will be launched later this year.

In an interview with 0-100.ro, Hakim Boutehra, General Director of Renault Commercial Roumanie, announced plans for the utilitarian version of the hugely successful Duster SUV. To make it happen, engineers at Renault’s technical center in Titu have teamed up with the aforementioned experts at Romturingia coachbuilder.

Duster single cab confirmed, would make a nice NP200

Renault’s Dacia division in Romania is forging ahead with a bakkie version of the second-generation Renault/Dacia Duster SUV and it will be more work-oriented than the South American Renault Oroch, meaning it’s almost certain to take the form of a single cab.

This was confirmed by Renault Romania’s commercial GM Hakim Boutehra in an interview with 0-100.ro, the publication also speculating that it would likely become the most affordable pick-up on the market, and have spartan rather than plush finishes.

But here’s where it gets interesting. This vehicle would ultimately serve as a successor to the Dacia Logan pick-up, which also served the basis for South Africa’s Nissan NP200 through the company’s alliance ties with Renault.

Which begs the question - would this new Duster bakkie not make the perfect replacement for the NP200? The compact Nissan, which is a common sight on our roads, was first launched back in 2008, so a replacement would certainly be welcomed by customers.

However, at this stage Nissan South Africa states “at this point we are not expecting changes to our local NP200 range”.

So will the current version make fun of decades like its predecessor the 1400 did, or will Nissan SA eventually replace it somewhere down the line? That’s anyone’s guess at this point, but if it were ever replaced the Romanian bakkie would make the perfect candidate.

The bakkie that you see in the pictures, incidentally, is a coach-built example created by Romturingia, but Dacia is working together with that company on bringing the official model to life, so the high-volume Dacia version should look similar to this. It’s also not hard to imagine it with a Nissan Navara-like grille.

Fancy a Renault Duster Single-Cab Bakkie?

The prototype you see here is a Dacia Duster single-cab bakkie built by Romanian coachbuilder, Romturingia. Recent comments by Renault Commercial Vehicle Romania chief, Hakim Boutehra suggest that it's nearly production ready

While we are still waiting to see whether the Duster Oroch will make it to our market, we came across this Duster-based single cab bakkie prototype, which looks rather good. It was built by a Romanian company called Romturingia, who also built 500 single-cab bakkies based on the first generation Duster in 2014, which, months later resulted in Renault producing the Duster Oroch for the South American market.

This latest build is based on the second generation Duster and was shown at the IAA Hannover Commercial Vehicle Show. The model retains the new Duster’s styling but adds a cargo bed. This Duster bakkie is powered by an 81 kW 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine and comes equipped with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system.

We think that a Renault Duster single-cab bakkie would sell well in South Africa and provide some competition to the ageing Nissan NP200 which currently dominates the 1-tonne bakkie market.

Do you think Renault should produce this single-cab Duster bakkie? If Renault can secure right-hand drive production for this single-cab bakkie and the Oroch, we think it'll be sold in South Africa.

Anyone on the coast got this new pile of rust?
They are good cars but here they are just a bucket of rust (Previous Version)
Have friends that got the Duster and struggle with Renault with big rust problems with Renault just giving excuses and skipping the problem. I am thinking of getting one but the big problem as said is the coast rust problem with these cars.
End up with a engine and a rust heap.

My Dad's had one of the original made in India models for almost 4 years in PE and hasn't had a rust problem.

What is it with the idiots at Renault South Africa that they just can't get anything right?

They bring in a Prestige EDC model with surround-view cameras.

If you watch the videos, and if someone at Renault SA had half a brain, they would know surround-view is useful for OFFROAD challenges to see what terrain is around the vehicle.

So why on this earth do they only fit it to the 2x4 model, not the 4x4!?!

And don't get me started on the Koleos - another great car they're going to destroy here by calling it "affordable" when all they've done is strip if of the great features like automatic braking, powered tailgate, lane-keeping assist and an engine people ACTUALLY want : a 2.0 turbodiesel.. (these are standard on a UK Koleos)

From all the Renault's i've owned, i've found Renault SA to be staffed by a bunch of morons. Which is such a shame because they are GREAT cars.

Dacia backs veterans in Morocco rally bid

1430-mile Carta rally will see four race-prepped Duster SUVs piloted by ex-military personnel

Dacia will support a fleet of veterans and ex-military service personnel to contest a series of cross-country rallies in Morocco and the UK as part of a partnership with the Future Terrain charity.

Future Terrain was established to help military veterans, particularly those with physical and mental injuries, to earn qualifications that will help them gain civilian employment.

Through the programme a Future Terrain team will compete in four Dacia Dusters in the 1430-mile Carta Rallye off-road event that starts in Morocco on 31 March, and the British National Cross-Country Championship.

The Dusters are competing in the GPS Cup section of the Carta Rally, which runs for largely standard-spec machine and mixes elements of a timed event with a navigation rally.

A number of veterans have been undergoing training in the Dusters on tank proving grounds at MOD Bovington in Dorset. Grant White, Future Terrain’s operations chief and a former Royal Marine who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident, said: “Even in standard form on road tyres the Dusters have been really capable.”

The Future Terrain charity has its roots in a previous initiative called Race2Recovery, which led to a team of service personnel competing in the Dakar Rally.

Renault Duster: 4x4 model finally joins SA range

When the new Renault Duster launched in South Africa in October 2018, the range was missing the 4x4 model. Now, however, this derivative has joined the local line-up, which swells to six variants.

Priced at R327 900, the 1,5 dCi Dynamique 4x4 sits near the summit of the range, with only the flagship 1,5 dCi Prestige EDC (at R340 900) above it.

As with the front-driven oil-burning models, power comes from the French brand’s familiar 1,5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. But in this case the 80 kW engine generates 260 N.m (up from the EDC-equipped 4x2 model's 250 N.m), and is mated to all four corners via a six-speed manual gearbox. Renault claims a combined fuel consumption of 5,2 L/100 km for this model.

The 4x4 derivative boasts hill-descent control and a special “MultiView” camera that lends the driver an improved view of the terrain at the front, rear and side of the vehicle. Three driving modes are offered: 2WD (front wheels driven), automatic (allowing variable torque distribution to all four wheels) and lock mode (locking distribution between all four wheels).

As with other Duster derivatives, a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a three-year/45 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km) ships standard.

Renault Duster available in 4x4 guise again

Renault’s second-generation Duster first hit South African streets last year in 4x2 guise only, but now the 4x4 version is here for those who want a bit more dust (and the odd off-road obstacle) in their lives.

It follows the same mechanical formula as the first-generation 4x4 model, with power coming from a 1.5 dCi turbodiesel engine, rated at 80kW and 260Nm, and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with an extremely low first-gear ratio that acts as a partial substitute to low-range gearing.

It certainly scores points as affordable alternative to a having to fit a heavy and expensive transfer case, but it will take you time to adapt your gear stick stirring habits in everyday driving as second gear effectively becomes first gear and so on, which takes some getting used to.

As before, the Duster 4x4 is fitted with a permanent all-wheel-drive system sourced from the Nissan X-Trail’s parts bin (through Renault’s alliance of course). It offers three selectable driving modes: 2WD, Automatic and 4WD Lock, the latter providing equal distribution between all four wheels for tackling more challenging terrain.

Also helping you out in that regard is a generous ground clearance of 210mm as well as respective approach and departure angles of 30 degrees and 34 degrees.

Not to mention the new MultiView Camera that shows you the terrain to the front, rear and side, and the 4x4 Monitor, which displays the vehicle’s pitch and roll angles.

Other cabin features include automatic climate control, cruise control, rear park distance control and a touchscreen infotainment system with satnav as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
