The Renault Kwid Thread (Kwid Lovers)

Interestingly, Tata Tiago is inching closer to the Renault Kwid which took the small car market by storm ever since its launch because of its unique design.

The carmaker sold 5,438 units of Tiago, just one less than the French carmaker's Renault Kwid.

“TIAGO led the company’s transformation journey and set a benchmark in the hatchback segment. With TIAGO, we showcased tremendous potential, and continued our legacy of offering game-changing and category defining products. It recently crossed the one lakh bookings milestone in the domestic market, since its launch in April 2016. Riding on the back of a healthy booking order, we have witnessed month-on-month growth in an immensely competitive hatchback segment. The recently launched TIAGO AMT has also received an overwhelming response. Currently, 15%-20% of the total TIAGO’s booked are AMT.”

However, it seems popularity of the Renault Kwid is fading as sales nearly dropped by 42 percent.

Industry experts believe that after a certain period the popularity of new launches lose their shine as new products come into the market and the consumer is spoilt for choice in the mini hatchback segment.

Apart from this, people are moving up the ladder; even the first time buyer is considering buying a compact hatchback.

Saw a Kwid going around a circle yesterday, was just behind it.

Right back wheel lifted off the tar. Driver hit a wobbly and shot off out the circle onto the grass luckily no damage.

I would not drive one. We were just bumbling along no speeding involved.

Renault should be ashamed for selling a car without airbags and ABS. They were one of the first to boast a lot of "not super expensive" models with 5-star NCAP and now they're producing this rubbish.

I mean really is the software for ABS and an airbag module SO expensive they can't put it on the entry level? Which also irks me because "entry-level" should NOT be allowed to mean "we don't mind if you skid off the road and have steering column through your face" model!

I like Renault's a alot and i've had a few. I expect more from them. Its saddening.

Last month (August) 784 'Kiewiets' were sold.

The question is: How many of these were bought by car rental companies?

Are these rental companies not the big buyers of Datsun Go ( 451 units) and 'Kiewiets'?

Renault SA adds Kwid Xtreme variant to local range

Renault South Africa has added a third, limited-edition derivative to its local Kwid range, but the new flagship model – dubbed Kwid Xtreme – still does without ABS.

The brand says the newcomer will be available “in limited numbers”. For the record, the local arm of the French automaker has sold more than 6 000 examples of the Kwid since the budget vehicle’s launch late in 2016.

The Kwid Xtreme is based on the Dynamique model (priced some R15 000 higher), but adds an exterior styling pack that includes chrome accents for the front grille, fog-lamp surrounds, front bumper, rear bumper corners and tailgate.

Black roof-rails, black plastic mud-flaps, 14-inch rims and decals are also part of the package. This model furthermore gains rear parking sensors and auto-locking doors (from 20 km/h).

Power still comes from a naturally aspirated 1,0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, linked to a five-speed manual gearbox. Key figures include a peak power output of 50 kW and maximum torque of 91 N.m (at a lofty 4 250 r/min).

While we must again stress that ABS has not been added, the Kwid does feature a single airbag, along with a five-year/150 000 km warranty (the service plan is optional).

Pricing:

Renault Kwid Expression 1,0-litre SCe: R124 900
Renault Kwid Dynamique 1,0-litre SCe: R134 900
Renault Kwid Xtreme 1,0-litre SCe: R149 900

Instead of all that other crap, why don't they just add ABS?? This car has a nice interior, for the price. I'm always scared ****less when one of these little cars come up behind me at speed at an intersection and you are not sure if they will be able to stop. At least with ABS a few accidents can be prevented.

Renault SA launches limited edition Kwid

Renault’s entry-level Kwid has its fair share of shortcomings as you’ll see in our road test from last year, but given the market’s hunger for affordable vehicles, combined with its desire for trendy-looking crossovers, the little tyke has sold up a storm, consistently notching up sales of over 700 units a month.

In a bid to capitalise on this demand, Renault has just launched a spiced up version in South Africa.

Called the Kwid Extreme, and priced at R149 900 (a R15 000 premium over the Dynamique version), the new limited edition comes with 14-inch alloy wheels and an exterior styling pack of sorts. This includes chrome garnishes on the front bumper and tailgate, decals on the side as well as black roof rails and mudflaps.

The standard features list has been beefed up with the addition of reverse park sensors and drive-off locking. This is in addition to the 17.8cm touchscreen MediaNav system with Bluetooth that’s already fitted to the Dynamique, along with air conditioning, remote central locking, front electric windows and driver's side airbag.

Power comes from the familiar 1-litre normally aspirated petrol engine that produces 50kW and 91Nm.

For the record, the Kwid also boasts generous-for-the-segment boot space of 300 litres and a ground clearance of 180mm.

every time I see one, I think its been in an accident, looks so squished,

and goes to prove a point, if you put some labels on a car and call it "extreme" people will buy it....

‘Reinforced’ Renault Kwid undergoes Latin NCAP test

Back in May 2016, the Renault Kwid failed to score a single star for adult occupancy safety in its initial Global NCAP crash-test in India. A few months later, a revised version of the budget mini-crossover was tested, scoring a single star.

Now, the Kwid produced for the South American market has been tested by Latin NCAP, showing “clear improvements” in safety compared to the India-built version, with a final result of three stars (for both adult occupant and child occupant protection).

Of course, the Kwid currently sold in South Africa is imported from India, and has just a single airbag and (still) does without ABS. Some changes are expected to be made to the local Kwid range early in 2018, while a further update is scheduled for the final quarter of next year. It;s not year clear whether safety updates are on the cards.

The Brazilian-market Kwid tested by Latin NCAP, meanwhile, boasts ABS, four airbags and Isofix child-seat anchors as standard. And, likely more importantly, this version also boasts “extra structural reinforcements” compared to the Indian model tested by Global NCAP last year.

In the embedded Twitter video below, note the stark difference in safety performance between the India-built and Brazil-built Kwids during their respective crash-tests…

3 stars for the latest Renault Kwid built in Brazil & crash tested by @LatinNCAP, compared to zero stars for the original Kwid made in India. https://t.co/47XfeRuGmC #safercarsforindia pic.twitter.com/Mf9nOLjso1

— GlobalNCAP (@GlobalNCAP) November 16, 2017

Latin NCAP reported that the Brazilian-spec Kwid “showed an adequate frontal protection and marginal side-impact protection, with weak protection to the chest of the adult but enough to reach a solid three stars in adult occupant protection”.

The crash-test authority added that the Kwid’s side-impact structure “prevented massive intrusion of the side-impact barrier, which combined with the side thorax airbag could keep the adult injuries below the high probability of life-threatening injuries”.

The child occupants, meanwhile, enjoyed “adequate and good protection during the front and side crash tests” thanks to the child restraint system that was installed using the Isofix and top-tether anchorages.

Latin NCAP also noted that the Kwid tested lacked an airbag deactivation option up front, while also doing without three-point seatbelts.

“It is good to see how fast manufacturers can react from the first-ever tested Kwid to this three-star Brazilian-made Kwid. It is encouraging to see car-makers reacting to Latin NCAP’s, Global NCAP’s and consumers’ preferences for better safety performance, even in entry level cars,” said Alejandro Furas, secretary general of Latin NCAP.

Here’s hoping some of these improvements will be rolled out to the South African market soon.
