Kriel thrilled to lead the Boks against BaaBaas
Springbok centre Jesse Kriel, who will captain South Africa for the first time on Saturday in the Qatar Airways Cup against the Barbarians, was trilled about being bestowed that honour and said he cannot wait to lead the team onto the field.
Kriel takes over the captaincy from Siya Kolisi, who was forced to withdraw from the match due to a niggle.
The world-class midfielder, who has amassed 79 caps since making his Test debut in 2015, admitted that while there was a brief stint of nervousness after receiving the news, he is keen for the challenge, and he drew comfort from the fact that there were so many leaders within the team, saying it would make his job easier.
“I’m excited an honoured,” said Kriel.
“One of the big aspects of our team is that everyone takes ownership in their areas on the game, so this match won’t be any different for me on Saturday.
“I’m very happy about accepting this responsibility, and although I was a little nervous at one stage, I’m keen to go out there and lead the team.
“Fortunately, we have a lot of leaders in guys like Lood (de Jager), Malcolm (Marx), Damian (de Allende), Cheslin (Kolbe), and Kurt-Lee (Arendse), so having them in the team will make my job easier.”
Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick was equally excited to see Kriel fulfil the role, and he was confident that the hard-working centre would deliver on the expectations on him.
“We always try to give players as much time as possible to recover from niggles, and since Siya has a stiff neck, we thought it would be best not to risk him for this game,” said Stick.
“As part of our planning we also try to build more leaders in the group, and Jesse has always been in that category, and I’m excited to see how he assumes that role this weekend.”
Both Kriel and Stick were ecstatic about the international season officially kicking off and said facing the Barbarians was the ideal match for the team as they prepare for the Castle Lager Incoming Series against Italy and Georgia.
“People missed Bok Fridays, and as a team we know that when the Boks play it brings an exciting vibe to the country,” said Stick.
“The Proteas have done very well (winning the World Test Championship), and Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana are doing well too, so we would like to build on that.
“As a team we enjoy making a difference in the South Africa and hopefully we can continue to make the country proud.”
Kriel shared these sentiments: “As a team are excited to be involved in an international match again. We all work really hard at our clubs to get here, and this is what we live for as players, so we are certainly approaching this match as a Test, and we have no doubt it will set the tone for the season ahead.”
Zoning in on the Barbarians, Stick said: “They have players with that X-factor and many leaders in their team as well. Given the fact that it is tough to analyse them, we feel this is exactly the type of test we need to start off the international season.
“This obviously means our players have to make wise decisions on the field, and given the calibre of their players, we know it’s going to be a challenging match.”
Stick emphasised, however, that their focus in the Springbok camp was to tick their boxes to lay a strong foundation for the season ahead.
The match will be hosted at the DHL Stadium and kick-off is at 17h10.

Wonder how many tickets sold, weather might also have been a concern.
On a positive note the Boks depth is look extremely good, if we had 2 teams in a World Cup both could reach the semis.

Team looked to be quite in tune with each other. New guys showed up, scrummie is a bit of a slow arse but his general play is good. All round good showing even if it was just a Barbarians match. Looking forward to seeing them play more.

Springbok planning on track, says Erasmus
The Springboks planning for the opening four matches of the international season made a satisfactory start, said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus after the victory over the Barbarians at a rain-swept DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday.
Erasmus said that the selection for the opening phase of the season had been decided some time ago as he looked forward to the Castle Lager Incoming Series against Italy (two Tests) and Georgia. The Boks beat the BaaBaas by 54-7.
“We won’t get carried away with this performance,” said Erasmus.
“Certainly, some of the newer guys showed us that they can do it at this level, but we’ll layer them in.
“We know who is going to play in Italy one and two, and certainly by the end of the Georgia game, which will be a grind, we’ll have a group of 45, 50 that have had some game time.”
The Springboks scored eight tries to one as they opened their season in a match played in rain that intermittently swept across the stadium.
“We came in here to be bold and positive and not let the conditions affect us and keep the ball in hand and I thought we looked dangerous on turnover ball,” said Jesse Kriel, who led the side in the absence of the injured Siya Kolisi, who withdrew on the eve of the match.
“I thought we looked dangerous when we got the ball into guys like Aphelele Fassi, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cheslin Kolbe’s hands. They’re special rugby players, they can make something out of nothing, and we saw that today.”
Erasmus said that the team were looking forward to the drier conditions that can be expected in Pretoria on Saturday in the first Test against Italy.
“Some of the half gaps and some of the line breaks we made would have stuck if the weather had been drier” he said. “We can’t wait to play on a dry pitch and improve on our attack.
“We want to get better, the next three matches we’ll be trying to focus on us before we hit the Castle Lager Rugby Championship.”
Erasmus deployed inside centre Andre Esterhuizen as a replacement loose forward in what he described as a new hybrid role, that had been in the planning for some months.
“You can have two ways of looking at it,” said Erasmus.
“You have can a forward covering a back position like Kwagga Smith covering wing, and you can have a back covering a forward position, like Andre covering flanker.
“You can call him a hybrid player – but he is a backline player who can also play in the forwards now. He has been training with both the forwards and the backs, and I must say Felix Jones handles his load very well in how much he does with the forwards and how much he does with the backs.
“We started chatting to him about it five months ago, but he is a backline player who can also play forward.”
Erasmus also praised the form of Lood de Jager, making a long-awaited return at lock: “The condition that he had was almost career ending, but when we did the fitness testing three weeks ago, he was exceptional.
“His body might be 32 or 33, but he has had some two or three years ‘rest’ in the last couple of years, and I think that showed. I also thought Jean Kleyn went deep into the game very well. We’re very glad Lood came through it, and we have some nice depth at lock now.
“Overall, it was a satisfying performance. It was a good hit out but now the test matches start next week.”
