The Rugby thread

Yes, but there is more to it. R360 promised not to clash with any World Rugby schedule, but hasn't been able to produce a plan. I won't know; this is all business talk, and not much is being made public. R360 is still Union Rugby, but without World Rugby's endorsement.

It is said that R360 has signed pre-contract agreements with more than 200 Union and League rugby players. Their wheels are rolling.

They are engaging with World Rugby sometime next year again to seek sanction. Though the signals are showing that they will launch their competition with or without approval. The issue is long-term contracts. Contract buyouts aren't cheap. It is the player's decision.

In my opinion, this should have been launched in early 2028.
Lucrative contracts which deprive players of playing for their nation.... players who are loyal to the core values which make them a distinct people.

Hmm.

Something doesn't fit.

You know.... call me a conspiracy theorist but I've long suspected complicated rules that not even the players are able to play by/stick to serve a different purpose....

Jus sayin

For me, R360 looks to be all about the money. Like I said, it serves to be disruptive, so where they succeed, it will change Union Rugby as we know it.

OT:

This is happening in Chess too, FIDE vs Freestyle Chess. The new game challenges traditional chess, although it was technically initiated by Bobby Fischer with Chess 360.

Just see the IPL, and they succeeded.

What was the justification SAns used when choosing to play in the IPL over being selected to play for the Proteas?

You would need to ask that in the cricket threads.

The main issue will be contract buyouts, because I can't see them having the provisions to enable a player to represent their home union. The pool, or more so the squad, will become diminished. Conditioning takes time. R360 will continue in 2028, pending on their own success, but they want to begin with their three seasons, rooted in long-term contracts.

Anyhow, time will tell. Union Rugby do need a shake-up though.

Well, that would be up to the player when he signs the contract, too, right?

It wouldn't be as though he was being held down against his will while he tried to sneak away for a few weeks here and there for an international series.

A contract is an agreement. And one that can be broken. One just needs penalties, stipulated in the contract, to mitigate the downsides of a party changing their minds according to circumstances..

I tend to agree, although it becomes a matter of where to draw the line..

One thing I find is that RU is becoming obsessed with the TMO and on-field referrals to TMO.

It undermines the refs confidence when he can be interrupted for anything trivial i.e. other than serious red/yellow card offenses. It's a societal trend to defer to higher authority instead of being encouraged to cultivate and trust your own judgement.

Even if a slight knock-on leads to a try.... my personal view is that if the ref missed it, it's probably an oversight that will go both ways across many matches. People who aren't infantilized understand the refs are human and their mistakes are part of the game.

Reinach's knock-on that led to Snyman's try being reversed is a case in point.... and that last minute try where an outstretched hand was impossible to call a try to any rugby fan, too.

This is going to work to the detriment of the spirit of game, imo.

This has the smell of that attempted euro soccer league hijack. Never gonna happen

In layman's terms, it is when you change rules. Rugby Union and Rugby League are both distinct codes with their own rules. R360 serves to disrupt Rugby Union. It is a product to bring about change that is not sanctioned by World Rugby. R360 wants to lure the best players within Union and League, contractually, to participate in a Grand Prix-style tournament. They want two seasonal blocks.

They sign players, it will be problematic to access these players when they are needed.

I have no idea what rules R360 will play. They would have their own rule book, which is sanctioned by R360.
So I see that Mike Tindall is kinda like the face of it, and the promoter, but who's the investors, backers, money bags, companies etc behind all of this, is there any information on that ?

Not sure can really compare the IPL considering it was backed by the BCCI who pretty much control cricket, they weren't a real 'breakaway' league.

Yes, I can. It is not about being a breakaway league; it is about domestic commitments. The BCCI is not the ICC. There are agreements between National Governing Bodies and the IPL (and its stakeholders). The IPL has revised its rules several times since its inauguration. There have been several disagreements between the boards and the IPL, all related to commitments.

Now, that said, it is up to the player who is contracted. It is the same thing with the player auctions. From my memory, they have never blocked a player attending national duty, though contractual obligations may have limited camp attendance.

To get back OT.

R360 is not sanctioned by World Rugby. They are, however, intended to be sanctioned in 2026. Nor do they need a national governing board. World Rugby could create inconveniences, such as a strict schedule. I think they are going all private, but ventilating the processes to ensure public legitimacy. Having pre-contracts does make it seem that they have the capital to do so.

From what is said, their backers are 885 Capital, Martin Gilbert, Albachiara, and Oakvale Capital. They also have the legal person involved who, by chance, helped establish how the IPL is governed.

The constant booing and shouting by the trash Welsh supporters gets really boring.

Nevermind that, the dominance the stormers have had, they should be 30-0 up at HT. So many squandered opportunities. Scarlett's out to spoil but Stormers need to put them away. 17 points is nothing.

Some might not like this but I can see why Evan Roos won't be a bok again. He like petty fights for no reason at all. He is a liability.
