You wouldn't expect the media to lambast Amla for scoring 12 and 27 in a test match against India would you?

Similar scenario.

One of the finest proponents of the sport had an off day. It happens.

His off day was perfectly timed for when it didn’t count.

Much as I love the guy, Manie on the other hand has the habit of having his off days when it does count

Look I love the Boks, but man this ref was one sided against the Irish.
Was our first try not forward?
Over an 80 minute game there are a litany of 50/50 calls. Some have a small impact, some a much larger impact. All both sides want is consistency in how the laws are applied and by extension their fair share of the 50/50's.

Over the years the Boks have battled for parity in the 50/50 department. It's nice to get the rub of the green now and then...

What was the penalty count in the end? Those stats are yet to be published but the ref pinged us plenty. Kurt Lee was binned too. The Lowe try that the 'biased in SA's favour' ref allowed, was written off only after the TMO interjected with the reply.

So ja... make of it what you will...

When I watch the Boks play it is with a very impartial eye so feel free to disregard my opinion but I thought the Boks were getting pinged for ridiculous stuff...

What about Bongi being pinged for crawling through a ruck when he clearly latched onto an Irish leg?
Yip, that was one of the penalties I thought was ridiculous.

Kwagga with a successful jackal only for Ox to be pinged for not rolling away. Ox was long gone by the time Kwagga had affected the jackal. We never got to see a reply of that play, come to think of it....

I was more interested how some of the members on this thread is going on. The same guys is constantly complaining about the ref. Now suddenly its a good ref. It seems like only when the decisions favor us, then the ref is good and not bias. Anything else, the whole world is against us.

I must say, it was a frustrating game to watch at times.

What has got me excited is how expansive the Boks were playing. Tony Brown effect. There was a definitive move away from their traditional kicking game. Very risky but given we haven't beaten the Irish since 2016 playing the traditional way, perhaps the right approach (we won didn't we)?

One would really need to see the stats but kicks out of hand, whether that be from Faf or Pollard were way, way below what is considered normal for us.

Running the ball from deep inside our own half when the half time hooter had already sounded, is something totally out of character for a Bok side.

But then, just when you think the Boks have moved away from their power game, they walk the Irish pack over the tryline, from a scrum, for a match winning penalty try!! That scrum was as clutch a play as you'll ever see...

Yeah, have you heard the Irish fans this morning on social media? And the Irish coach in the post match presser?

Perhaps this is the problem with rugby and people in general. Can't take responsibility for their own failures, preferring to blame others.

In rugby it is very, very, very easy to blame the ref. A couple of 50/50s don't go your way and the net effect is large rather than a small IE you concede points on the back of that 50/50 then yes, you know have probable cause to blame the ref for the defeat...

The thing is, it's very difficult to remain impartial in rugby because so many 50/50s exist. There is such a grey area that exists, that if you backing team A, and team B gets the 50/50, you going to feel aggrieved or hard done by. More so when that call leads to points...

Great post sand_man.

My posts last night where a bit out of hand and emotions took over, I apologize to all you forumites.

Kudos to the Springboks on the win and the Irish for putting up a great fight.

Do we judge people on what they did during that game or what they have previously done. Professional criticism needs to be consistent and fair.
Libbok: forgets how to kick every 2nd game

Pollard: struggles once in 10 games

Pollard haters: "bUt wHeRe'S tHe cOnSiStEnCy?! iT's nOt fAiR!!!"

The press have lambasted Amla often only for him to shut them up next game so very poor example to pick.

We see the same thing when kwagga has a bad game. The critique he gets is over the top. While a similar performance from Siya or previously duanne will either be overlooked or justified.

Pollard had a bad game from the tee yesterday - he kicked 4 from 6 and missed touch once (which led to a fortunate, if well taken try). That would've been on the good side of Manie's kicking. And added to this is that Manie seems to miss game winning kicks.

You saying some players are above reproach when it comes to the press?

Haven't done an audit myself lately (or ever) but I haven't really noticed. Anyone/everyone is generally fair game. I know there was a fair amount of public outrage when Siya was made captain. Not good enough, political appointee etc etc etc

It's usually Joe public that has a lot to say but you not referring to public sentiment right?

And what classifies as lambast? I don't ever recall hash getting lambasted in the press. Maybe you have link to an occasion when he did?

No don't generally keep press links or clips as a hobby just a perception of how the writing about certain players go in South Africa sport from my observations. Not unique to SA the press do have certain bias towards some players.

Why is he moaning about a bottom of the table clash.
Don't be rude.

Anyway, I thought I'd post a link to VMTV Rugby Pod cause I know how much Saffa's love Matt Williams. Merely to illustrate my point that it's very easy to find pundits and coaches that complain when the 50/50s go against them. It has sadly become the norm in rugby...
