Primates are so common yet in SA it is so sensitive to use them as comparison. History has shown us this with Penny Sparrow and that clothing store that had a shirt with a monkey on it. In SA you just dont do it, ever. The repercussions are severe. It is by default racist. It is a get out of jail free card for anyone who wants to commit violence.
This country should really ban all images of primates so politicians cannot use it for political goals

It does have a bit of history behind it, it's not something they DECIDED to make offensive.

If the shoe fits....

I dont see any indication that this is racially motivated , comparing EFF to baboons is in no way the same as comparing black people to baboons.

But yea they most definitely do share similarities with baboons but i would say they are more closely matched to rats.

Not saying he is a racist or a bad guy, it seems like he does a lot of genuine good - it's just social issues we have to be open to and how people perceive us.

Calling people baboons is not a racial epithet, it's behavioural. Anyone from a farming area can attest to the behaviour of baboon troops.
Also when farm workers call these protestors/looters baboons you can be pretty sure it's not racial in nature. Perhaps it's more a language thing?

As to being mindful of how people could perceive it, it's analogous to this

This would necessarily also ban all images of humans too. Brilliant move.
 
Not really new and there is a town in the UK, can't remember it offhand where the inhabitants are known as "monkey hangers" (quite proud of it they are too) because they hanged a monkey suspected of being a French spy; the only survivor of a shipwreck. Eish.

I think it's likely he will become president. Cyril is just one scandal from resigning.
