Yip, this is not at all going to affect presidential chances. Was he even in the motocade and knew this was happening to stop it ? For example, did his car go through this incident and he ignored it ?
Let's say he was in the motorcade, he is the deputy President, so even if something happened prior to the moering, his car was never going to stop and look on while the other guys entertain whatever the problem is, the most responsible thing is to get him out of there, not to sit around waiting while security deals with whatever issue.

If he was in the cars involved they would put him in another car and drive off while the others deal with the issue, he is certainly not in a position to be intervening and brokering peace between his guys and the Polo guys.

Then why lie about it then?

He's speaking hypothetically. It would be a security risk for his car to stop at an incident. I doubt they'd have stopped with a principal in tow. Both from a security and PR PoV.
I was aware it was a hypothetical situation being painted, then I replied hypothetically that the DP would be lying as they said he wasn't there.

The public deserve an apology from Mashatile.

While we might feel grateful that the assault was not covered up (hard to do so under the circumstances), the SAPS’ response is not sufficient. The seven men are easily identifiable: they should be arrested, charged, named publicly and summarily dismissed TODAY.

But there’s a bigger problem to be confronted here, which we may thank the thug-officers for bringing back to our attention.

According to a parliamentary question answered by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2022, taxpayers are funding VIP protection to the tune of nearly R2-billion a year and rising.

But we should also ask why most current Cabinet members and MECs need their blue lights? If they are in danger of assault or assassination it’s probably self-inflicted: the result of their involvement with the criminal underworld, in corrupt tender deals and intra-party faction fights. As with access to healthcare, basic education and housing they should show humility and suffer the consequences of government failures with the rest of us.

Correct statement by Mashatile would be to say that he is disbanding these blue light convoys for all members of the executive. President and deputy get 2 bodyguards. Everyone else gets one. They can sit in traffic like everyone else.

Would you vote for him if he said that?

Sounds like you saying you will believe that he was in there regardless of the facts?
South African facts are fickle. Even if he was there yesterday, today there would be two hundred and seventy eleven honorable ANC membahs and supporters of the GLP to verify he was not part of the motorcade ...
He was most likely not in those cars, that's why they had all the luxury of time and freedom to do what they did.
... only driving past.

:P

Would you vote for him if he said that?
If they actually instituted the reform, it would dramatically change my opinion of him. And likewise probably a lot of undecided voters.

Haven't heard his stance on all the poisons of SA like BEE, EWC, NHI, AA and so on.
