Would a lockdown for the elections be such a bad thing?

I was in India on holiday some years ago when they announced they would be having surprise elections. In the days leading up to the election they put us on lockdown and banned alcohol, dancing, loud music and placed us under a curfew. The rationale was that it keeps politicians from bribing voters with alcohol and everyone will be well rested and sober minded when it comes time to vote.
