But in real terms (not percentage)- it seems that the DA voter base did not grow. And we are always hearing about their supernatural abilities to get out their voters.

In all fairness to the DA. They were in shambles- and lots of people were saying that they were doomed when Mmusi and other black leaders left.
So a hold in WC, with a slight increase nationally is sufficient.

ANC may also consider EFF+PA which will get them over 50%.
But I'm sure that business and other players are also sitting at the negotiation tables right now coming to a solution that will be better to stabilise the economy which is ANC+DA.

They still grew, while fighting off attacks from the PA and those small new parties. Now those same small new party voters are hoping for an ANC/DA coalition.
The only other party that grew is MK. It's an embarrassment for the rest...

Grew nationally percentage wise but failed at getting out the same volume of voters as the last elections?

It would be great if the ANC would get below 40%. 39% sounds so much worse than 40.

Could be any number of reasons why turnout was lower, including IEC incompetence. Turnout was lower for everyone, so this goal shifting argument is irrelevant...

Also an asset manager made the point that the PIC - which is the biggest institutional money manger in SA and is responsible for government employees' pensions - have no real interest in seeing stock markets collapse. The PIC is quite influential within the business-sided faction of the ANC. Make no mistake about that.
