Why are the DA demanding a DP role? It's a meaningless role, the only benefit there is the perks. And what's with all the alleged DA leaks? Are they doing it, they don't seem to have dismissed any of it for fakes?

They also need to spread some patronage amongst their members.

Personal opinion on this, I think the "demand" of a DP role is an overstretch, so that the ANC try negotiate down from there and the DA get closer to what they actually want.

Also, as an aside, we see the DP as a "meaningless position" largely due to it being held by an ANC person who is subservient to the President anyway... if that position was filled by someone else we might see a very different type of DP role emerge.

They are not really wanting the DP role, they are actually aiming for "Monitoring and Evaluation" role within the Presidency which keeps tabs on the progress of presidential programmes. It's unlikely the DA is leaking - almost certainly a RET ANC member who wants to be like a parrot chanting: "DA bad".

Monitoring is no longer a ministry and why would Ramaphosa appoint opposition people into his presidency?

Ramaphosa is required to concede a bit because otherwise he will be out of power. The DA put him in power so they are rightly demanding influential positions as a reward for their support.

Actually no, the DA didn't put him in power, check the number of votes he got, remove the DA's votes and see how many votes are left, compared to that of the person he was competing with, let's not make things up.

There is nothing wrong with the DA demanding whatever they are demanding, it's their right to negotiate in their best interest, but they are simply not going to get everything they want.

Wouldn't "Minister in the presidency" give them the same thing?
 
The way I see it, the DA knows Cyril is their best bet, that's what Zille has been saying all along, the situation as it is suits them just fine, they have achieved their goal of keeping the EFF and MK out, now the next goal is to get their members fed through the executive posts, well fed members are happy members, leading to a united, stronger party.

If in the process of getting the executive posts they get some influential one that would be an extra boost, hence they are pushing for more, but that is not a live or die moment of "If I don't get this, I am walking away".

So there will be trade offs, I see the ANC using the DGs and Deputy Minister positions to bargain, if they get a Minister, Deputy and DG it will eat into their share of positions, so the DA will decide if they want to take more ministries or get fewer but more effective ones where they have full control of the whole value chain.

Remove the number of DA votes and you will get under 200 Champ. He'd fail at a vote of no confidence without the DA.
