The ANC's little puppet party openly announces their intent to poison the well.

Al Jama-ah hopes joining GNU will keep Joburg mayor in place, weaken DA​


Party leader Ganief Hendricks said one of Al Jama-ah’s reasons for joining the GNU would contribute to weakening the DA’s influence and powers.

“This new configuration allows smaller parties to boost the ANC’s bargaining abilities; thus, not only weakening the DA and its allies’, but with the hope to sideline them or throwing them off board.”

“Al Jama-ah’s decision to join the GNU is based on viewing the ANC’s statement of intent through a different lens; the re-crafted statement of intent differs from that the ANC had in mind with the DA and this reconfiguration does not imply being ‘in bed’ with the DA as claimed by many,” Hendricks said.

The way I see it, the DA knows Cyril is their best bet, that's what Zille has been saying all along, the situation as it is suits them just fine, they have achieved their goal of keeping the EFF and MK out, now the next goal is to get their members fed through the executive posts, well fed members are happy members, leading to a united, stronger party.

If in the process of getting the executive posts they get some influential one that would be an extra boost, hence they are pushing for more, but that is not a live or die moment of "If I don't get this, I am walking away".

So there will be trade offs, I see the ANC using the DGs and Deputy Minister positions to bargain, if they get a Minister, Deputy and DG it will eat into their share of positions, so the DA will decide if they want to take more ministries or get fewer but more effective ones where they have full control of the whole value chain.

If they get 10 (even 8) ministerial posts I'd drop the deputy minister demands if I were the DA. I'd not budge on DG though, that's a make or break role if you want to succeed.

All 1% parties are open. That's why they are there in the first place.

For full control of the ministerial portfolios that they get.

That would also not be a deal breaker for the ANC this is irrelevant and not holding up the negotiations.

The DA would not do that to begin with, but if they did the MK and EFF would grab the chance with both hands, the MK and the EFF's biggest problem is not the DA, it is the ANC, if they manage to divide and weaken the ANC the battle is won. That's why the DA would not expose themselves like that by wanting to remove Ramaphosa.

So the best thing to do if they fall out with the ANC is for the DA to go to parliament, keep everything as is and vote on a case by case basis, the ANC's weakness is at the sweet spot for them, weak enough for the DA to exploit, but still strong enough for it not to go hand it's soul to Zuma and the EFF. Bringing a motion of no confidence against Cyril would be a grave error of judgment.

I agree with your assessment, but if the GNU negotiations fall appart they have to bring a motion of no confidence in Cyril on principle.

Yeah that is a realistic assessment.

I just reckon that if the DA inititated a vote of no-confidence, all the progressive caucus lot would vote to keep Cyril in place, and then shortly thereafter initiate their own vote of no confidence and we'd end up in a quagmire of political bullshyte

He was elected president to make this shít work. If he fails he has to go. That's exactly what a motion of no confidence is for.

I'm actually shocked that people still have confidence in Cyril to do anything, but maybe now this time the stakes are high enough.
