All Renault models to feature retro new logo by 2024

Two-dimensional diamond emblem first appeared on the 5 electric supermini concep

Renault has confirmed the new version of its long-running diamond logo first seen on the 5 electric concept car will be introduced across its entire range by 2024.

The French company is the latest car brand to refresh its logo to tie in with a major electrification push. The new design follows the trend for two-dimensional logos, which have become popular because they display better than 3D designs in digital form.

Renault first showed the retro-influenced new logo on the 5 concept car at its Renaulution event, with design director Gilles Vidal saying the reaction to it influenced the design to adopt it more widely.

“The Renault 5 was for us a formidable testing ground,” said Vidal. “In view of the enthusiasm and the very positive feedback we received about the logo, we decided to launch it.”

Insider’s perspective: Is it better to buy a car on auction or from a dealer?

Auctions can be a fantastic place to pick up a great deal, but what are some of the challenges faced by consumers when buying on auction?

According to Janson Ponting, sales director at WeBuyCars, online auctions provide an easy-to-use platform that enables consumers to find “value buys” from the comfort of their homes. It is not only straightforward and convenient but gives consumers access to multiple vehicles that can be viewed and evaluated simultaneously.

Selection is a big factor

Businesses use auctions to promote special prices, liquidate large quantities of stock and promote unit sales resulting in auctions giving consumers an opportunity to find a vehicle for much less than they would ordinarily pay when buying a vehicle off the showroom floor.

Technology also plays a significant role in buyer’s choice

Premium online auction platforms provide high quality 360° photographs of the interior and exterior of a vehicle, together with independent mechanical condition reports to support consumers in their quest to find that special vehicle.

Yet Ponting cautions that as always, consumers should take the time to do their homework before deciding on a pre-owned vehicle and this is especially true for vehicles purchased under auction terms and conditions.

Volkswagen (like Audi) won’t develop new TSI and TDI engines, says CEO

The CEO of the Volkswagen brand has confirmed the company has no plans to develop any new combustion engines.

The news comes after Audi’s CEO said the Ingolstadt-based firm had ended development of new combustion engines.

According to Automotive News Europe, VW brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter told Automobilwoche the Wolfsburg-based company would not develop another new TSI or TDI powerplant, as it shifted its focus to electric mobility.

“At the moment, I don’t expect a completely new engine family to be launched again,” he said.

Instead, VW would “further develop” existing internal combustion engines in order to meet the upcoming Euro 7 regulations.

@FiestaST Do you still get the monthly breakdown of vehicles sold? I think it was a doc from Lightstone Auto or NAAMSA. It used to show sales for every vehicle maker and every model they made.

It was both of them IIRC. But a while back (before Rona + lockdown) they stopped reporting on individual model sales.

Total bummer.

Buying a car: 360-degree expert weighs in on the evolution of car retail in SA

Even before the pandemic hit, South African car dealers had noticed a shift toward digital retailing. Particularly when it comes to showcasing vehicles and attracting leads, the internet has become the first point of reference for consumers, using search engines to pinpoint the vehicle they’re looking for.

Nic Carr, one of the founders of InstaVid360, spoke to us about how he’s assisting dealerships in South Africa and across the world in embracing digital retailing, through the implementation of software that gives you a 360-degree view of a vehicle, inside and out.

ADDING GREATER TRANSPARENCY

More than a decade ago, Carr and his associates began work on delivering retail and data solutions to the automotive sector. He saw a gap in the market when it came to how dealerships showcased their vehicles. Instead of pictures and the odd video, Carr wanted to enable dealers to record 360-degree spins in a streamlined manner that would be easily available for use on whatever retail platform the dealer preferred.

Design veteran accuses some Japanese automakers of waving ‘ugly stick’

A British design veteran says he’s worried the “ugly stick” is being waved around “vigorously” in some parts of the automotive industry.

Peter Horbury, who has been in the industry for more than 40 years and is currently executive vice-president for design at the Geely Auto group, made the comments during an Automotive News Europe podcast.

“I don’t see anything wrong in doing ‘beautiful’. I do get worried the ‘ugly stick’ is getting waved about vigorously in some parts of the world,” Horbury said, without calling out any one particular automaker.

“In some Japanese designs, there’s almost a random line and shape pasted onto the car, which cuts up the car into pieces,” he continued.

Only saw this thread now. Maybe it was posted, but any idea what we can expect in terms of pricing when the new CPA laws come into play i.e. you dont need to pay for a service plan when you buy your car? What kind of difference in price are we expecting to see?

VW being rebranded as Voltswagen in US

Name change will apply to all VW electric vehicles; not expected to come to UK or mainland Europe

All Volkswagen electric vehicles will now be branded Voltswagen in the US and the company name will change from Volkswagen of America to Voltswagen of America.

The move comes as part of a rebranding exercise designed to emphasise the company’s all-electric future in America.

The change will be from May 2021 and is not an April Fools’ Day joke. It will include new brand guidelines and a redesign for Volkswagen’s website in the US.

“We might be changing out our 'K' for a 'T', but what we aren't changing is this brand’s commitment to making best-in-class vehicles for drivers and people everywhere,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Voltswagen of America. “The idea of a ‘people’s car’ is the very fabric of our being. We have said, from the beginning of our shift to an electric future, that we will build EVs for the millions, not just millionaires.”

A spokesperson for VW UK said there is no plan to change the name in the UK, where cars will continue to follow the Volkswagen ID nomenclature, currently being used on the recent ID 3 and ID 4.

Report: VW will not rename US arm as Voltswagen

Announcement by Volkswagen of America that it will undergo electric rebrand is marketing stunt, claims report

Volkswagen has said it will change the name of its US operations to Voltswagen of America in a bid to emphasis its electric ambitions – but a report has suggested the announcement is a marketing stunt.

News of the name switch first leaked on Monday, and was confirmed in an official statement by the firm (today). Before VW confirmed the move, there had been suggestions that the release was a leaked April Fools' Day joke. But citing three sources Reuters has now reported that the name change is a publicity stunt, with Voltswagen of America due to announce tomorrow (Wednesday) that it will not be rebranding.

According to the announcement, the rebrand to Voltswagen of America will begain from May 2021, and will include new brand guidelines and a redesign for Volkswagen’s website in the US.

VW pulls a fast one: 'Voltswagen' rebrand was an early April Fool's joke after all

Volkswagen’s US subsidiary is keeping its name and will not rename itself "Voltswagen," a company spokesman said on Tuesday, confirming that an earlier announcement was an April Fool's joke that may have gone further than intended.

The German carmaker's US subsidiary, which is launching a media blitz for a new all-electric SUV called the ID.4, recrafted its social media pages on Tuesday and said the new moniker represents its "future-forward investment in e-mobility," according to a press release from Tuesday that was widely covered, including by AFP.

Company officials kept up the pretense for hours, with a US spokesman confirming the name change early on Tuesday in response to an email question about whether it was an April Fool's joke.

But VW spokesman Mark Gillies said in an email later that day that the "Voltswagen" rebrand was a joke after the Wall Street Journal and other media reported that the announcement was indeed a ruse.
