In February 2025, sales in South Africa’s new-vehicle market increased 7.3% year on year to 47 978 units. As has been the case for several months now, the local passenger-vehicle segment powered this overall industry growth, with registrations in this part of the market climbing a significant 17.0% year on year to 33 757 units.

For the record, the rental channel accounted for a considerable 14.6% of the latter total. While Toyota Motors SA again ranked 1st both overall and in the passenger-vehicle segment, Suzuki Auto SA retained the runner-up position it grabbed from Volkswagen Group Africa in January 2025.

Expert Guide | Avoiding costly mistakes in SA's pre-owned car market

As second-hand vehicle sales continue to rise in the country, South Africans are being cautioned to exercise extreme caution when looking to buy one.

According to a recent study conducted by Grand View Research, South Africa's "pre-owned car market continues to expand, with revenues reaching approximately $ 14.9 billion (R272.1 billion) in 2024 and projected to rise to $ 18.3 billion (R329.4 billion) by 2030."

In contrast, new vehicle sales have declined by 3.0% in 2024 compared to the previous year. The demand for pre-owned vehicles has led to a surge in prices, pushing the average price of a pre-owned car to R408,516 by December 2024.

The growth is largely attributed to individuals seeking more affordable vehicles due to the country's economic struggles and high fuel prices.

However, as the pre-owned vehicle market continues to boom, Siyakha Masiye, spokesperson at Miway Insurance has warned that buying a used car "comes with both pros and cons".

Unlikely for the most part as they only makes cars that sell volume on their domestic markets & that is pretty much exclusively crossover/SUV's & EV's of different sizes that's before we get into the LHD to RHD story.

At the recent BMW Group Annual Conference, the Munich-based automaker shared all sorts of interesting facts and figures, including exactly how many BMW X3 units were produced at Plant Rosslyn in South Africa last year.

As a reminder, the BMW Group – which comprises the BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad brands – reported a worldwide sales figure of 2 450 804 units for 2024. For the record, that represents a 4.0% year-on-year decline.

Last year, the BMW Group manufactured a total of 2 513 830 vehicles (or 2 729 557, including BMW Motorrad products), down 5.6% year on year. BMW’s Spartanburg factory in the United States built the most vehicles at 396 117 (or 15.8% of the automobile total).

Dadong (China), Regensburg (Germany), Dingolfing (Germany), Tiexi (China), Leipzig (Germany), Munich (Germany) and Oxford (United Kingdom) all likewise reported 6-figure production numbers in 2024, with San Luis Potosí (Mexico) falling just short on 95 236 units

Ford Ranger bakkie: still the king in SA's used car market

Used car market sales continue to look positive following a strong start to 2025.

According to data from "AutoTrader", February posted superior year-on-year (YoY) sales and only a slight decline in monthly sales despite fewer business days.

Meanwhile, January normally sees a strong performance as a result of various incentives and discounts offered by dealerships but February did well with 28,885 used vehicles sold, representing a 0.8% YoY increase and a 6.7% month-on-month (MoM) decrease.

Ranger still tops

The Ford Ranger remains undefeated, maintaining its top position in the used car market. The top six best-selling vehicles have retained their rankings from last month, with some shifts between the seventh and tenth spots.

The Rising Epidemic of Hijackings in SA | Are armoured vehicles worth the investment against hijackings in South Africa?

For decades, South Africans have been turning their homes into ‘safe spaces’ through measures such as high walls, electric fencing, and burglar bars.

Yet, with around 65 vehicle hijackings occurring in the country each day, one might expect more South Africans to transform their cars into fortresses on wheels.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as that.

While armoured vehicles are readily available in South Africa, they are not a financially viable option for most motorists, with new models from established armouring manufacturers priced at over R1 million, inclusive of all features.

But for those who can afford them, armoured vehicles are becoming a more attractive proposition for South Africans seeking to protect themselves from crimes such as hijacking as well as the growing kidnapping scourge that plagues the country.

South Africa currently has three major armoured vehicle manufacturers, these being SVI, Armoured Mobility and Armourmax, all with extensive experience in the game and wide product ranges available.

Customers can select from two primary protection levels: B4 and B6, with variations like B4+. The B4 level provides protection against most handguns, including 9mm and .44 Magnum, while the more robust B6 level is engineered to withstand a wider range of firearms, including AK47s and R1 assault rifles.

There are also ‘discreet’ and ‘non-discreet’ options, with the former maintaining the look and feel of a regular car. Non-discreet armouring, generally cheaper and preferred by commercial and security customers, has more obvious armouring features.
