Stoopid taxes. :(

What is the standard of living like in Norway compared to SA? What is the average salary of people there?

I remember a scenario years back where someone found that it was cheaper to import a Toyota (including taxes, shipping, etc) than to buy it locally. The Toyota was manufactured in South Africa.

"The decline in economic growth, combined with an interest rate hike, has negatively affected South Africa’s new vehicle sales, reports the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa)

Sales of new vehicles during August declined 8.2% (year-on-year). This follows the 6%. decrease recorded in July 2015."

Not really comparable, so I get what you're saying. Difference being that Sweden's prices are in line with SA and their currency, living standards, salaries are on par with Norway's. Right now I'm paying more in taxes than double my SA salary was. :/ But yeah, no potholes or Nklandas and the lights stay on, so I guess it's not all bad.

Stoopid taxes. :(

As far as I recall, South Africa has the most expensive cars in the world, when compared with income, so, yes, they may be more expensive in Norway in Rand terms, but not in terms of earning power.

Car prices here have been merrily climbing since the early 90's and there must be a point at which even the stupid buyers cry "Enough" and stop this madness.

As you know, I was in the business, and I was nauseated when I saw the Quarterly price increases come through from CJD and Fiat/Alfa with total disregard for any sort of cost of living increase. In other words, they have been running well ahead of COL for years, but still the idiots buy them! At Subaru, we had ONE price increase per year, and even then it was held back as far as possible, but there too, after about 2007, the prices were already too high.

The weak Rand is rightly blamed, in some instances, but don't forget that Fiat introduced the 500 originally, at a starting price of R 180 000, and when they discovered that it was just too expensive, they had a re-launch at R 125 000, completely screwing the poor idiots who had bought the first batch. Now....think of it, if you can DROP the price by 55 k and still make a profit, what are those cars actually costing you in the first place?

I know that it's not just Fiat and Jeep that do this, but you have to question the ludicrous prices of the 500 X and the Jeep Renegade - totally ridiculous to the point where they don't deserve to sell at all.

In 2010 the new Subaru STi was launched at R 470 000, today, basically the same car ( the engine and drive train are identical) will set you back just under R 640 000 - and this is with a company that worries about price increases - the comparative exercise with other models from other companies will probably be worse.

BUT - the SA buyer has himself to blame as well, as there should have been some sort of backlash donkeys years ago - far too many of our over priced cars are bought on Company/Government schemes, and in that case, who gives a damn about cost?!

New cars prices are simply too expensive irrespective of the state of the rand and the economy. Residual was a tool invented to allow manufacturers to keep raising prices, and keep sales high at the same time. Now they have reached a point that car prices are even too high despite residuals being available. Would love to see the new debt mechanism they come up with to allow people to keep buying cars they cannot afford.

This.
Residual or balloon payments should never have been allowed, they should just let natural pricing dictate market demand and pricing

Norway is not part of EU as you probably know by know and they put taxes on everything. They really suck with import stuff. Very limited choices as well compare to other EU contries, at least when i was there. Electronics were crazy expensive also. But like you said no Nkandla and chimps :)

The Ford EcoSport would easily be in the top 5 if they brought more in. Can easily wait a couple of months for one, and when you drive past the places storing the Rangers and Figos and whatever next to the M57 (alongside the R21) there are no EcoSports.

Oh flip! I thought you were still at Subaru. Whenever I see one here I always think of you.

But yeah, it's ridiculous. And you're right about gov schemes etc. When I worked at Eskom some of the staff below me would buy new GTi's and A4s like it was going out of fashion, while I was still driving my 8yr old Corsa.

I think you're right about the buying power. It is hellishly expensive here, but everyone is earning a living wage.

Yeah I don't actually mind my 35% tax that I pay. I cry myself to sleep everytime I see my tax deductions, but I don't pay for medical, or theft insurance or backup generators or just about anything else.

Also even though Norway is a major oil producer, they're still charging us R24/liter for fuel. They're pumping all that money into retirement plans and social subsidies. Then again, they don't have 4.5m tax payers paying for 17m people's social grants.

Only 35%?

I would junp with joy at that rate. Then on top we must pay for medical, security, municipal crap etc etc etc.

Is the new car prices in SA not very high atm because of some manufacturing tax or import tax? (I heard something like this a while back)

I've only been driving for 10 years, I'm on my 7th car, and I've never bought a brand new car. For me a demo has always been expensive enough and what is closer to where the out the box prices should be. Heck, I've had 1 demo vehicle and 6 used and used/approved vehicles. Car prices have been out of control for atleast 10 years now.

It's funny though, we all know south Africans love cars and have no shame parking their new GTI or 135 outside their low cost housing.

Ps: isn't it nice to see the best sellers (polo, corolla, etios, ranger, hilux) are also the most stollen and hijacked.... Should add a foot note to those figures.

We have the Wesbank CEO saying this, but most people still think they know better. Zero sympathy from me for people who are in debt because of a car...

They should stop offering balloon if they are so concerned about its impact on people.
That should mean many nice cars going up for auction soon, that will be had at good prices. :D

Car prices are hectic, even the cheap Go has gone up to R100k+. The Sandero has had a couple of increases in 9 months, Kia has priced their cars a lot higher as well. It's ridiculous.
