The SA Vehicle Industry Thread

Please refrain from the news that "Peugeot is likely to pull out". Hogwash until its actually announced by the horse.

As stated it's a brand with a rich history in SA & nobody wants them to "pull out".

Why the over sensitivity? I've owned 5 Pugs which were all great but moved on when they lost their key selling point, which was tech+feature bang for buck and the 5yr maintenance plan which made them a great buy.

It's not rocket science to work out that 64 units spread over at least 20-30 dealerships is unsustainable to say the least. Do I wish for any manufacturer to leave the country? Of course not. I'm passionate about 4 wheels so manufacturers leaving is completely against my love of the automobile. But saying they are on a knife edge is a blooming fact bud!

Lol easy bro. I'm not arguing with your basic math. Peugeot SA has said repeatedly they have no plans to pull out from the local market. The last time was late last year.

Unless they actually they announce it then it counts. Everything up this point is hearsay even if the math counts against them.

I've never posted anything other than my non insider opinion on Peugeot in here. Your "no pull out" post came across very "Respect my authority" (said in a Cartman voice).

Wait, hang on. Has Roux made you his watch dog?

I am waiting to laugh at the price of next years new BMW 3 series when they announce it next year.
Not that I can afford to replace my current 3'er though.
I am going to bet R600k starting price for the 320D minimum
Scary.
The 320d will probably blow right past the 600k mark, the cheapest 320d currently goes for R559,500 brand new, it will only take a 7% price increase to exceed 600k ...

Which is why I drive Subaru now after falling completely in love with my past BMW 323i and then 325i ... get F-ed BMW!!!

I must say I particularly enjoy laughing at every 318i on the road, what a POS engine and yet the poor sucker behind the wheel had to fork out half a bar for it?!? :wtf:

^And the other half of the time on a flatbed truck? :p

They did before and can again. Had a '85 305 SR, nice car really, parts were a problem.

Not yet, thankfully. So far it has been very reliable... and very hot.

Got an AC pump from happytouringcarpartsgwallstore.aliexpress.com and now I'm waiting to have it fitted, but as always it is never as simple as that. Now they are waiting for a valve extension . Not sure what that it, might as well be a muffler bearing. But I have faith that one day the car will be just fine... maybe.

SA’s 10 best-selling passenger cars of May 2017

May 2017’s aggregate new vehicle sales in South Africa came in at 41 783 units, a decrease of 2,6% year-on-year, according to Naamsa.

As always, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s happening in terms of individual model sales. So, we’ve examined the figures released by Naamsa, and picked out the ten best-selling passenger vehicles for the month (also, be sure to check out the 10 best-selling bakkies).

One must bear in mind that certain importers – such as Hyundai and Kia – do not submit individual model sales figures, instead only disclosing aggregate sales stats. Mercedes-Benz, too, has taken a similar stance, with BMW SA recently joining its German rival in reporting one aggregate sales number in terms of passenger car sales.

So, what happened in the fifth month of 2017? Well, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo stayed on top, but Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) climbed two places to second.

That means the regular Polo found itself in the unusual position of being outside of the top two in third, with the Toyota Fortuner dropping one to fourth.

The Toyota Etios climbed one to fifth and the Renault Kwid moved up two to sixth. The recently facelifted Volkswagen Golf, meanwhile, surged back into the top ten with an impressive 618 units, placing seventh, while the Ford EcoSport fell one to eighth. The Toyota RAV4 moved up one to ninth, while the Ford Fiesta plummeted five spots to tenth.

Other bits and bobs

So, what else happened in May? Well, these are the figures that caught our eye. Interestingly, General Motors – which is pulling the Chevrolet brand from South Africa at the end of the year – reported just one aggregate figure (522), including Opel, while the new Fiat Tipo kicked off with 62 registrations, proving to be its brand’s best seller.

Ford Kuga sales fell to a mere 18 units, while the Everest only just missed out on a top ten with 365 units moved. Honda’s best performer was the Brio (189) although the BR-V chipped in with a handy 154 units, too.

Jaguar sold 51 units of its F-Pace, while Mazda’s best-seller was the new CX-5 (350). The Nissan X-Trail managed 222 units, while the Datsun GO and GO+ added 269 and 250 units, respectively.

Peugeot totalled 64 registrations for May, while Renault’s best-performers (bar the Kwid mentioned above) were the Sandero (325), Clio (302) and Kadjar (219).

Some 52 units of the new Suzuki Ignis were registered in May, while the Toyota C-HR managed 189 and the Audi Q2 some 51 units. Volkswagen, meanwhile, sold 319 units of its Tiguan.

See the top ten table below (and have a look back at April’s figures here):

South Africa’s 10 best-selling passengers cars of May 2017:

1. Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 1 955
2. Toyota Corolla/Auris/Quest – 1 415
3. Volkswagen Polo – 1 376
4. Toyota Fortuner – 1 249
5. Toyota Etios – 773
6. Renault Kwid – 738
7. Volkswagen Golf – 618
8. Ford EcoSport – 603
9. Toyota RAV4 – 520
10. Ford Fiesta – 390

New Car Sales Summary for May 2017

The local automotive sector remains under pressure as declines across all segments were registered during the month of May 2017. Take a look at this new car sales summary for the details.

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has reported declines across all sectors for May 2017. The Ford Ranger bakkie topped the local sales chart for May 2017 with the Toyota Hilux also selling well to claim second place. The Volkswagen Polo Vivo holds third position closely followed by the Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Polo. Toyota is currently the best-selling car brand in South Africa.

New Car Sales Outlook

Despite marginal improvement in new vehicle sales in the beginning of the year, NAAMSA’s outlook for the remainder of 2017 is uncertain. A polarised political environment and the prospect of subdued economic growth in the short to medium term continues to have a negative impact on business confidence and consumer sentiment.

NAAMSA comments that domestic vehicle sales for 2017 “will likely be flat at best” based on a number of assumptions including that South Africa would avoid further credit rating agencies’ downgrades, that interest rates won’t increase over the short to medium term, that economic growth would improve and finally, that the exchange rate remains stable, despite volatility. NAAMSA does predict, however, that exports will improve by some 3.6% on the back of expected global growth in 2017.

Peugeot Citroën SA: Japanese firm buys 51% stake

VT Holdings has acquired a 51% stake in Peugeot Citroën SA.

Peugeot Citroën South Africa has announced that Japan-based company VT Holdings has purchased a majority stake in its struggling local operations, meaning that it is no longer a wholly owned subsidiary of the PSA Group.

VT Holdings, which is listed on the Tokyo Stock exchange, has been in the automobile industry for some 34 years, distributing vehicles in five countries.

The holding company officially acquired a 51% stake on June 1, with Peugeot Citroën South Africa saying the joint venture “allows the Peugeot brand to strengthen its position in South Africa through an upgrade of the entire value chain”.

In addition, Francisco Gaie has been appointed as the new managing director of Peugeot Citroën SA, replacing Francis Harnie, who has returned to Europe after six years at the helm.

“It is time to move forward in creating a new and exciting vision, one that produces even greater opportunities to our employees, dealers and most importantly to our customers,” said Gaie.

“We have new developments planned around products, aftersales and parts which we are confident will result in greater efficiencies, increase our market share and strengthen our position in the South African market place,” he added.

So, what is behind the decision? Well, Peugeot Citroën SA, which ceased sales of Citroën products locally in December 2016, told us that it needed to make its organisation “more efficient”.

“In South Africa, PSA Groupe made a deliberate choice, in order to grasp a business opportunity to optimise its development with VT Holdings as a partner.

“We felt it was important to adapt our organisation to the specific requirements of local markets and VT Holdings have an extensive experience in distribution which is more agile, better able to contribute, adapt and ensure the profitability of our investment,” the company said.

What this will mean for Opel, which has been bought by the PSA Group, remains to be seen.

Spend wisely gents....

South African car buyers warned to ‘spend wisely’…

WesBank says the effects of South Africa’s economy being downgraded to junk status continue to be felt in the new vehicle sales industry, warning consumers to “spend wisely”.

According to Naamsa, new vehicle sales for May 2017 saw a year-on-year decline of 2,6%, pushing year-to-date sales down 1,7%.

“WesBank forecasted marginal growth for 2017, which was made with expectation of a stable economic environment,” said Rudolf Mahoney, head of brand and communications for WesBank.

“However, political and economic uncertainty have affected this outlook, as well as consumer buying behaviour.”

Mahoney went on to warn South Africans to “hedge your risks”.

“A lot of uncertainty exists as a result of recent economic developments, making it difficult to accurately predict the outlook for the motor industry for the remainder of the year. For consumers in the market the picture is a lot clearer, though: spend wisely and try to hedge your risks,” he said.

“May had a favourable calendar for sales, with four more working days than April and one more working day than the same period last year. Yet despite this, overall sales declined. We can only attribute this to uncertainty among buyers.”

Two indicators of this uncertainty among consumers can be seen in WesBank’s data. In May, there were year-on-year increases for average deal duration in both the new and used market. Statistics showed that consumers were hesitant to replace their vehicles, with the replacement cycle extending by 9% compared to May last year.

Those who did return to the market chose to manage risk by opting for fixed interest rates, to avoid potential future rate hikes. Data from WesBank shows a 19% increase in demand for fixed interest since South Africa’s economy was downgraded to junk status.

Affordability and value-for-money also continue to factor into purchase decisions. Demand for balloon payments has risen 13%, year-on-year, showing that consumers are seeking ways to lower monthly instalments. The demand for used vehicles continued unabated, with the used-to-new ratio reaching 2,37-to-1 in the past month.

SA has a new leader in the best-selling vehicle race…

In May 2017, the Ford Ranger was the best-selling bakkie in South Africa (with 2 875 units sold), enough to make it the top-selling vehicle overall for the month, too. And this strong performance furthermore saw the locally built bakkie assume the lead of the sales race year-to-date.

In the first five months of 2017, according to our maths, the Ranger has sold 13 681 units, with the Toyota Hilux a mere 15 units behind on 13 666. The Volkswagen Polo Vivo has managed 11 948 units, while the regular Polo weighed in with 10 150 units.

Ford Motor Company of SA says the Ranger was also one of the country’s top exports for May, with 4 432 vehicles sent to customers in Europe, the Middle East and the rest of Africa.

“The South African economy is clearly under pressure at the moment, and this is reflected in the reduced levels of purchasing activity in the new vehicle industry,” said Neale Hill, director of marketing, sales and service in the sub-Saharan Africa region.

“However, we are buoyed by the continued strong demand for the Ford Ranger, which is once again the best-selling vehicle overall in South Africa. It vindicates the massive investment Ford has made into its local manufacturing operations, and the work that has been done to ensure that the Ranger line-up is not only competitive, but sets the benchmark for the industry,” said Hill.

With overall industry sales down, Ford said that dealer profitability “remained essential for the survival of any brand”.

“It’s encouraging to note that Ford achieved 92,7% of its sales through the dealer channel, which is well above the total industry average of 90,2%,” Hill said.
