Such growth! Totally sustainable. No discounting by dealers. People buying the premium versions!

Still no turnaround by FCA. Circling the drain.

SA's 15 worst-selling cars (under R500k) of April 2019

The monthly Naamsa stats generally make for rather interesting reading. But, naturally, we tend to focus on the best-performing vehicles in terms of sales. Indeed, we’ve already reported the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles of April 2019, as well as listed the 10 best-selling bakkies in our market for the same period. But now we’ve decided to take a look at the worst-selling passenger car models on our shores.

Of course, we must point out that some automakers (such as Mercedes-Benz) disclose only aggregate sales statistics. Also, take note that – in order to make this list more relevant – we’ve excluded vehicle ranges that start at more than R500 000. Otherwise, this table would be dominated by luxury manufacturers such as Bentley, Ferrari and Maserati, whose high-priced vehicles traditionally sell in tiny numbers.

In addition, we don’t count sales from run-out stock of vehicles that have been officially discontinued locally, such as the Volkswagen Jetta, which managed three units this month (if the vehicle in question is no longer listed on the manufacturer’s local site, we won’t include it in the list below). And we’ve also heeded the call to include model ranges that failed to sell a single unit.

Good to see Ecosport back in the Top 10. Why is Ford taking so long to launch new Focus?

Good to see Ecosport back in the Top 10. Why is Ford taking so long to launch new Focus?

Last I heard it was (slightly) delayed to “get the pricing right”.

(If that makes sense).

They should really just commit now. They have a segment leader here but choose to runout the very last bit of the Gen 3. IE. 1 unit a month.

Scuderia South Africa placed 17 orders for vehicles in the first quarter of 2019 according to Naamsa sales figures.

Surprised there were no Honda's on the top 50 list. The Honda dealer I bought my balade at a few years back was selling 20 to 30 a month back then and that was one dealer. Guess its an older model now.

Honda isn't really selling anything interesting lately, in my opinion- and I'm saying this as a Honda owner.

SEE: Polo Vivo, Fortuner, Grand i10... SA's best-selling cars so far this year

Though new vehicle sales have been slow in 2019 thus far, one car showed no signs of letting up as it took charge of the passenger car market - the Volkswagen Polo Vivo.

From January to April, the Polo Vivo racked up a sales figure of 10 001 units - almost a fourth of the 39 674 units sold by all the vehicles in our top ten category.

Such was the Polo Vivo’s success that it trumped the bigger Polo by some margin; the latter only managing 6900 units over the first four months of 2019.

The way that SA market is going, we will only see small cars on the road soon. The rich will buy A1 and the poor will buy Kwid or Go :crying:... Okay, but people from Pretoria will still buy white Fortuners.

Mercedes-Benz could expand C-Class production in SA – report

A fresh report suggests Mercedes-Benz is considering scrapping production of its C-Class in the United States, leading to speculation the German firm’s plant in South Africa could pick up the slack.

According to Automotive News, the Stuttgart-based firm is mulling the end of C-Class sedan production in the US (despite having produced the model there for only the past five years), with a plan to build more SUVs instead.

It quotes industry forecaster LMC Automotive as saying production of the C-Class sedan in Alabama will cease in the final quarter of 2020.

"The SUV has really expanded from a consumer standpoint," said Jeff Schuster, president of global forecasting at LMC. "That's where the volume is; that's where the future is."

The report adds this could leave the door open for the automaker’s East London plant to increase its output (it apparently has 25 percent production capacity available), since the South African operation already produces the vehicle in right- and left-hand-drive form.

Bad news for SA car industry: Vehicle sales drop in May 2019 - Naamsa

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said that new vehicle sales continued to disappoint into May 2019, while export sales were also down for the first time this year.

Naamsa reports aggregate domestic sales at 40 506 units showed a decline of 2444 units or 57% from the 42 950 vehicles sold in May last year.

Export sales had registered a decline of 2866 vehicles or a fall of 8.8% compared to the 32 829 vehicles exported in May 2018.

Overall, out of the total reported industry sales of 40 506 vehicles, an estimated 35 506 units or 87.7% represented dealer sales, an estimated 5.8% represented sales to the vehicle rental Industry, 3.6% to industry corporate fleets and 2.9% to government.

South Africa's 10 best-selling bakkies of May 2019

The sales figures for May 2019 are in … and a whopping 1 214 units separate the top two vehicles as the (increasingly one-sided) battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.

According to Naamsa, May’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 40 506 units, representing a fall of 5,7 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (12 197 units), meanwhile, showed a drop of 13,0 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018.

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the fifth month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux remained at the very top of the table, with the Ford Ranger again having to make do with second place (after the first five months of 2019, the Japanese bakkie finds itself a full 5 392 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).

South Africa’s 10 best-selling bakkies of May 2019:

1. Toyota Hilux – 3 187
2. Ford Ranger – 1 973
3. Nissan NP200 – 1 363
4. Isuzu KB/D-Max – 1 312
5. Nissan NP300/Hardbody – 879
