SA's 10 best-selling passenger cars of May 2019

According to Naamsa, May 2019's new vehicle industry sales came in at 40 506 units, representing an increase of 5,7 percent, year on year. Here’s what happened in the fifth month of the year in the passenger vehicle segment...

As always, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s going on in terms of individual model sales. We’ve already examined the figures and picked out the 10 best-selling bakkies for the month, and now it’s time to do the same with the passenger vehicle market.

Take note that while BMW has started reporting individual model sales figures again, some brands such as German rival Mercedes-Benz continue to provide only aggregate data (Porsche, too, recently followed suit).

So, what happened in May 2019? Well, Volkswagen Polo Vivo remained in top spot, with the Polo hatch again settling in second place (for the record, the local arm of the German firm also sold 65 examples of its Polo Sedan).

Toyota’s Fortuner, meanwhile, climbed one to third place. The Hyundai Grand i10 moved up three spots to grab fourth, while the Toyota Etios improved by one place to finish in fifth.

The Toyota RAV4 thus fell three places to sixth, ahead of the Renault Kwid, which moved up one to seventh. The Ford EcoSport dropped three spots to eighth, while the Volkswagen Tiguan (including the Allspace variants) made a rare appearance on the list in ninth. The Renault Sandero also returned to snaffle tenth place.

South Africa’s 10 best-selling passenger cars of May 2019:

1. Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 2 478
2. Volkswagen Polo – 1 390
3. Toyota Fortuner – 1 319
4. Hyundai Grand i10 – 738
5. Toyota Etios – 719
6. Toyota RAV4 – 708
7. Renault Kwid – 634
8. Ford EcoSport – 586
9. Volkswagen Tiguan – 536
10. Renault Sandero – 535

New Car Sales in SA: May 2019

May 2019 proved to be a disappointing month for new vehicle sales in South Africa with declines across the spectrum. Take a look at the sales summary below…

New car sales continued to buckle under pressure as the second half of 2019 looms. In May, aggregate new car sales declined by some 5.7% and export sales recorded the first negative result of the year with a decline of 8.8%. The passenger segment declined by 1.4% and the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment also took a knock with a decline of 13%.

This is in contrast to April 2019 which saw a marginal increase of 0.7% and strong export results.

“We had warned against hopes of a major turn-around last month. May sales return to a picture more representative of the rest of the year,” says Ghana Msibi, WesBank Executive Head of Motor.

Won't sales pick up if they 1. drop the inflated prices and 2. run specials? Not rocket science.

Naamsa: May 2019 – SA sales ‘continue to disappoint’

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said new vehicle sales “continued to disappoint” into May 2019, while export sales were also down for the first time this year.

Reflecting on the new vehicle sales statistics for the month of May 2019, Naamsa confirmed aggregate domestic sales at 40 506 units showed a decline of 2 444 units or 5,7 percent from the 42 950 vehicles sold in May last year. Export sales had registered a decline of 2 866 vehicles or a fall of 8,8 percent compared to the 32 829 vehicles exported in May last year.

Overall, out of the total reported industry sales of 40 506 vehicles, an estimated 35 506 units or 87,7 percent represented dealer sales, an estimated 5,8 percent represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3,6 percent to industry corporate fleets and 2,9 percent to government.

The May 2019 new passenger car market had registered a decline of 378 cars or a fall of 1,4 percent to 26 170 units compared to the 26 548 new cars sold in May last year. The car rental industry’s contribution accounted for 7,9 percent of new car sales in May 2019.

Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini buses at 12 197 units during May 2019 had recorded a decline of 1 816 units or a fall of 13,0 percent from the 14 013 light commercial vehicles sold during the corresponding month last year.

Sales in the medium and heavy truck segments had a mixed performance and at 681 units and 1 458 units, respectively, reflected a marginal increase of two vehicles or an improvement of 0,3 percent in the case of medium commercial vehicles, and, in the case of heavy trucks and buses, a decline of 252 vehicles or a fall of 14,7 percent compared to the corresponding month last year.

It is cheap, and someone with a small income and no other means will probably leap at the opportunity to have a car even if it's a deathtrap.

Off topic but being a salesperson for VW must be the damned easiest job in South Africa

How many of the Suzuki Jimny did Suzuki SA manage to procure for May 2019 ? April it was something like 7 if I recall correctly.

SA's 14 worst-selling cars (under R500 000) of May 2019

The monthly Naamsa stats generally make for rather interesting reading. But, naturally, we tend to focus on the best-performing vehicles in terms of sales. Indeed, we’ve already reported the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles of May 2019, as well as listed the 10 best-selling bakkies in our market for the same period. But now we’ve decided to take a look at the worst-selling passenger car models on our shores.

Of course, we must point out that some automakers (such as Mercedes-Benz) disclose only aggregate sales statistics. Also, take note that – in order to make this list more relevant – we’ve excluded vehicle ranges that start at more than R500 000. Otherwise, this table would be dominated by luxury manufacturers such as Bentley, Ferrari and Maserati, whose high-priced vehicles traditionally sell in tiny numbers.

In addition, we don’t count sales from run-out stock of vehicles that have been officially discontinued locally (if the vehicle in question is no longer listed on the manufacturer’s local site, we won’t include it in the list below). And we’ve also heeded the call to include model ranges that failed to sell a single unit.

Dont think FCA, Subaru and Peugeot to survive in SA any longer. It just does not make any business sense for them to be here, if sales is less than 1000 vehicles a year
