Little to none IMO. I have 11 Rangers and an Ecosport in my fleet and, while I am irritated with Ford for dragging their heels and tarnishing the brand's now good name, I have zero concerns as there are little to no shared components or manufacturing plants with the Kuga

SA’s 10 best selling cars of 2016

2016 will go down as a dismal year for vehicle sales in South Africa, with Naamsa’s numbers showing an 11.4 percent drop compared to 2015, largely due to above-average vehicle price increases on the back of a weaker rand and low consumer confidence.

On the upside, experts are predicting a modest upturn during the second half of this year, providing that the year doesn’t dish up any nasty economic surprises.

There were no big changes to the status quo as far as South Africa’s best selling cars were concerned. The two best selling vehicles overall were bakkies, with Toyota moving 35 428 Hiluxes and Ford’s Ranger following closely at 32 468. We’ll deal with all the bakkies in a separate story, so for now let’s take a look at South Africa’s most popular passenger cars, including SUVs. Note, however, that brands such as Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz could not be included in this list as they do not report individual sales figures.

What to watch in 2017?

Renault’s Kwid was only introduced towards the end of 2016, but it’s been selling up a storm, with 752 units sold in December alone. Expect to see it on this list next year.

Many of SA’s most popular cars are also due for upgrades during the course of the year, including the Toyota Etios and Corolla, VW Golf and Renault Sandero. This could see them climb a notch or two on the sales charts.

Unless you buy scarce or rare models in anticipation of them gaining value over time, the average new car is going to devalue at an alarming pace and is most definitely not an investment as most people like to think.

The sooner SA moves out of that mindset the better
 
SA’S 11 WORST-SELLING CARS (UNDER R500K) OF DEC 2016

The monthly Naamsa stats generally make for rather interesting reading. But, naturally, we tend to focus on the best-performing vehicles in terms of sales.

Indeed, we’ve already reported the 10 best-selling passenger cars of December 2016, as well as listing the 10 best-selling bakkies in our market for the same period.

But now we’ve decided to take a look at the worst-selling passenger car models on our shores. Of course, we must bear in mind that certain importers – such as Hyundai and Kia – do not submit individual model sales figures, instead only disclosing aggregate sales stats. Mercedes-Benz, too, has taken a similar stance in recent times.

Also, take note that – in order to make this list more relevant – we’ve excluded vehicles ranges that start at more than R500 000. Otherwise, this table would be dominated by luxury manufacturers such as Bentley, Ferrari and Maserati, whose high-priced vehicles traditionally sell in tiny numbers.

So, what happened in December 2016? Well, the Suzuki SX4 and Toyota Prius each saw just a single registration, while the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, Infiniti Q50 and Toyota 86 each managed just a couple.

Another six vehicle ranges each sold just four units: Mahindra Xylo, Mazda MX-5, Nissan NV200, Tata Indica Vista, Volkswagen Scirocco and Volkswagen Golf SV.

Discontinued ranges that we did not consider for the list (but which still saw old stock finding homes) included the Mazda6 (1), Renault Megane III (1), Suzuki Splash (1), Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet (1) and Volkswagen CC (3).

I'm surprised the Mazda 6 is discontinued - looks like a very nice car. Also surprised to see the MX-5 on there.

Also, I can't seem to find stats for Fiat's bakkie and GWMs (I've noticed they no longer offer their SUV or 4x4 double cabs)
