10 Fastest-Selling Used Cars on Cars.co.za
We've analysed changes in the dealer listings of second-hand vehicles on Cars.co.za during January 2017 and, according to the information at our disposal, these are the 10 vehicles that positively "flew off dealership floors"...
We have approximately 65 000 cars for sale on our site at any given moment; some models are much sought after, but others less so. Which ones fall under the former category? We’ve looked at our data and produced a list of cars that spent the least amount of time in our used cars section. We removed outliers, such as seemingly overpriced cars and made sure a model sold at least 5 cars in the month to be worthy of its spot. We also excluded private sellers as it’s more difficult to determine whether a sale was made – or the advert has expired.
Without getting too hung up on the nitty gritty, here are the top 10 fastest-selling second-hand cars on Cars.co.za during January 2017.
1. Chevrolet Spark 1.2
The Chev Spark was highly sought after in January, taking an average of just 6 days to sell a car. The Spark featured as a budget car semi-finalist in this year’s Cars.co.za Consumer Awards, so its credentials stack up favourably. The average price of the Sparks sold last month was R110 292.
2. Ford Figo 1.4
The Ford Figo was a solid budget offering before the new model pushed the price a bit beyond the reach of many budget buyers. A Ford Figo listed on our site lasts on average 14 days before it gets snapped up. The average listed price for the Figos sold was R83 483.
3. Volkswagen Polo Vivo 1.4
According to new vehicle sales statistics, the Polo Vivo is often South Africa’s top-selling passenger car. The second-hand market wants them too. Average time listed: 18 days. Resale value looks to hold up reaonably well, with the average list price of R102 142.
4. Ford Fiesta 1.4
The theme of small hatchbacks continues as the funky Fiesta lists for 22 days on average. There were a lot of them sold in January as well, the 1.4 Ambiente model, in particular, sold 16 units alone. The average list price is high too, which suggests that it’s probably the newer models that found new homes, R159 250.
5. (Previous-generation) Renault Sandero Stepway 1.6
The old Sandero Stepway still appears to be a popular model. The new model is selling well too, but the average time it took for the previous-generation 1.6 derivative to sell was 24 days. The average list price was R88 980.
6. (Previous-generation) Hyundai i20 1.6
The i20 has become a very popular car on the local front. It appears to be quite reliable and Hyundai’s build quality has improved vastly over the last decade. Average time to sell: 26 days, and average listed price: R104 330.
7. Nissan NP200 1.6
The small business bakkies (also known as half-tonners, although their carrying capacities are usually much more than that) are popular used car buys; both Nissan and Chevrolet's products feature in this top 10. It takes around 26 days to sell an NP200, at an average list price of R102 664.
8. (Previous-generation) Chevrolet Corsa Utility 1.4
Just like in the new car sales figures, the Chevrolet and the Nissan shadow each other closely. Very similar bakkies built for small business owners. Interestingly, the Chevrolet appears to hold a bit more value on the second-hand market. Average time to sell: 37 days. Average list price: R118 178.
9. Audi A4 1.8T
The A4 probably sits above the likes of the 3 Series here as there are fewer listed A4s than 3 Series. It’s easier to sell as there’s less competition. Still, the A4 is a quality product and it’s easy to see why people seek them out on the second-hand market. Average time to sell: 54 days. Average list price: R137 457.
10. Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI
There are a lot of Polos listed on Cars.co.za, so competition for prospective buyers' attention is tough. Some can stay listed for a long time, but the Polo 1.2 (in particular) has an extremely high resale value. Average list prices for Polos sold in January 2017: R198 003. Average time to sell one is 73 days.
