South Africa’s new vehicle market continues to sag, with July 2019 seeing a 3.7 percent year-on-year decline, to 47 856 units.

However, despite it being a strong month for rental sales, it was passenger cars that took the big hit, declining by 8.2 percent versus July last year, while light commercial vehicle sales actually grew by 2.9 percent. Furthermore, the medium commercial market saw a 14.9 percent improvement and the heavies grew by a substantial 21.4 percent.

Not too long ago BMW was selling over 1000 of the 3 series a month! Merc as well sold a crap load of C-Class cars a month.

No 'R1-million SUVs' but 80 luxury BMWs in one month: These are the cars the SA government is buying

We often complain that government has ridiculous vehicle purchasing habits but the data tells us that while still exorbitant, expenditure on cars is being curbed.

Unpacking the government sales channel business from July, there is an absence of "R1m SUVs" or limousines.

It would appear that government is moderating (read: slightly) its fleet purchasing habits somewhat, as South Africa's fiscal imbalance becomes a reality.

Government should only be allowed to buy locally manufactured vehicles wherever possible. But hey , its not as if they are succeeding in boosting the economy at all.

But he had/has a serious American Pie Boner for the Brio. Recommends it usually. No problem with that.

From luxury BMWs to budget VW Polos, the government purchased a host of new vehicles in July 2019.

Using Naamsa's latest info we can give you an indication of just how much money was spent on new cars.

Calculating the cost is, of course, not a precise figure but we've calculated the total figure based on the entry-level price of each vehicle. It's possible that Government could have specced these vehicles to a much higher price and/or received a discount for purchasing units in bulk.

According to Naamsa, the South African automotive industry’s July 2019 export sales registered a “substantial gain” year-on-year, reflecting a climb of 22,1 percent, with 34 297 units shipped off during the month.

So, let’s take a look at which automakers were the biggest exporters from South Africa for the month.

Mercedes-Benz registers 'best July of all time' for global sales

Mercedes-Benz says it started the third quarter of 2019 with a new global sales record for the month of July. Some 188 857 vehicles wearing the three-pointed star were delivered, representing a 12,7 percent year-on-year increase in worldwide sales.

Much of that growth appeared to come from the Stuttgart-based firm’s compact-car range, although Benz also reported “significant increases in worldwide unit sales” in July of the S-Class sedan (up 17,7 percent) at approximately 5 800 units, the E-Class (up 11,1 percent) and the C-Class (up 10,4 percent).
