Record month for Suzuki SA - 1577 cars sold in July

Suzuki South Africa remains a beacon of light in an otherwise bleak new vehicle market.

The Japanese vehicle manufacturer beat all expectations to grow its total sales to 1577 new vehicles in July, setting a new all-time sales record in the process.

This figure is 6.6% higher than Suzuki’s previous sales record of 1 479 units, set in June this year, and it places Suzuki in position number nine in the overall Top 10 vehicle sales ranking.

By beating all market expectations, Suzuki has grown its share to 3.4% of the overall market and 5.03% of the passenger vehicle market. It also means that Suzuki will welcome its 75 000th customer in August, just over a decade after it opened its doors in the country.

Suzuki South Africa smashes its sales record in July 2019!

Suzuki South Africa says it smashed its previous monthly local sales record, with 1 577 new vehicles registered across the country in July 2019.

As we pointed out in our list of South Africa’s best-selling passenger vehicles, the Swift was the driving force behind the achievement, selling 635 units and earning itself a place in the top ten.

Suzuki SA’s final figure of 1 577 units is 6,6 percent up on its previous sales record of 1 479 units, set in June, and some 23,9 percent up year-on-year.

According to Naamsa's figures, this performance sees Suzuki SA move up to ninth position for July (and grow its share to 3,4 percent of the overall market and 5,03 percent of the passenger vehicle market), ahead of the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Mazda.

“Suzuki has been following a very optimistic strategy,” said André Venter, divisional manager of sales and marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa.

So, besides the Swift, which other vehicles performed well for Suzuki in July? Well, the Celerio (255), Ignis (164), Ertiga (127) and Baleno (101) all enjoyed solid months, while the Jimny added 81 units, the Vitara a further 59, the DZire another 41 and the Ciaz some 20 more.

I did a bit of delving and I found that Suzuki sold 550 passenger vehicles to the rental sector. That is certainly quite a distortion of 'sales'. Out of a total of 1484 passenger sales.
I don't have the rental sales of Suzuki of previous months.

Suzuki Carry sales are normally a handful per month, 10 per month, In July this soared to 93 units.

It appears that Suzuki decided to use July as a dumping ground.
The proof of the pudding will be August sales; let's wait see.

If they can secure more stock of Jimney sales would be hundreds more per month.

81 of the Jimny sold for the month is kind of where the previous model's sales hovered. It is a niche market.

But yes , there is a waiting list due to stock issues - surprised in the number they could procure for July.

Pretty surprised that the Nissan Micra is not sold there.

Some great cars here... but let's not forget the simple maths. Australia has a population of 25 million with more than 55 brands selling 1.1 million cars annually. Then there's the US. Population of 327 million and just 30-odd brands selling more than 17 million vehicles annually. It just doesn't stack up financially for local brands to offer every conceivable variant here. There are too many now and I'd suggest a lot of the newer entrants/brands are borderline viable while some other brands (e.g. Mercedes, Audi) have far too many offerings on their books. Compare what models they had 5 or 10 years ago to what they offer today. You can't just offer the car without parts backup, parts warehousing, dealer training etc. From a consumer point of view it would be good if CarAdvice asked those brands who sell less than 4,000 or 5,000 vehicles a year, how they can sustain themselves and their dealers. They can't, which is why we see multi-franchising gaining ground.

You do need to remember that USA and Australia are not the only 2 countries on earth. Yes USA sells more cars than australia, and yes they get about 34 brands (use to be over 40, however some got discontinued), but the number of cars nameplates offered by those brands is a lot higher than Aus, and they can choose customs with cars. The other reason why USA sells more cars is because it is a lot cheaper than Australia, which is why our sales are down, and we will need a good government for that to change, (as more prosperous times will not ever happen under this federal government).

Global car manufacturing slump hits oil demand

Global vehicle production is falling at the fastest rate since the financial crisis - depressing manufacturing output, freight and the consumption of oil and other commodities.

Global vehicle output declined last year by 1%, the first annual decrease since 2009 and only the third fall in 20 years, according to data from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA).

But output is on course to drop much faster in 2019, with production up so far in Japan, but down slightly in the United States and plunging in other major car manufacturing centres, including China, India and Germany.

Vehicle manufacturing is one largest and most networked of all global value chains, making it central to the global economy. Carmakers are also among the world’s largest consumers of energy and raw materials, intermediate products such as plastic, steel and aluminium, and services such as marketing and advertising.

The industry is a crucial source of demand for durable capital goods, a generator of high-value exports, and a provider of high-wage middle-class employment in most countries.

And its dispersed supply and marketing chains are a major driver of domestic and international freight demand, and by extension transportation fuels, especially diesel.

Growth in the worldwide vehicle fleet is the most important driver of consumption of refined fuels, and consequently crude oil.

Motor manufacturing therefore lies at the heart of the global energy system. Right now, the industry’s problems, with output falling for two years in a row, help explain the severe slowdown in oil consumption growth since the middle of 2018.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles SA says its brands are ‘here to stay’

The CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles South Africa says the group’s brands are “here to stay”.

Graham Eagle made the comments as FCA launched its exhibition space at the 2019 Festival of Motoring at Kyalami.

The Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Abarth and Jeep brands are displaying their wares at the show in Johannesburg.

“The Festival of Motoring has become a major stage for the South African motor industry to interact with consumers,” said Eagle, who took over the role of CEO of FCA South Africa at the end of July 2018.

“At a time when consumers expect brands to create authentic experiences, and products to serve continuously adapting demands, it is important for us to make our model range available for the South African public. And what more engaging brands and products do you get than those with passion, heritage, pedigree and excitement pulsing through their veins,” he said.

“We know we have great products. We’re proud to show them off at the Festival of Motoring and we are working hard to ensure our customer experience is the best it can possibly be.

Eagle conceded FCA had room to improve, but said the company was working hard to satisfy its customers.
