The Samsung i900 OMNIA Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Well I guess it depends on which version you are currently on? For example: on some older versions there was no business card reader or haptic feedback. If I had the vodafone version I would not even think twice about it... I agree with Piesang that JCHH1 is stable enough. I haven't tested the battery performance yet though...
Indeed.

If you're still on anything prior to JCHH1 the update is essential. I was on JCHH1 and the current update does not seem to have done a whole lot. My touch screen seems to be a bit more responsive though (I could just be imagining this :D).

The version after the one being pushed by Samsung SA is widely considered the most stable so that's the one to look out for.

I am on jbhh1, but think i might still wait. The only thing annoying me is battery life

First time users

i would suggest that people who get this phone new first do a hard reset. i did that and my phone was much faster.

then i would suggest getting the following programs:

advanced config tool
clear temp (clears temp files)
registry editor (self explanatory)
tman
fp7_ppc_en (flash player)
netcfv35.wm.armv4i (ms .net)
PPCPimbackup

i would say that i only use advanced config tool to do 1 thing, make the GPRS connection auto disconnect. i left everything else as is. open the program, goto menu - more settings - connections. then enable "disconnect after" and select your time.

tman makes sure that when you press the X in the top right hand corner it actually closes said app. normally WM will just minimize. it also has other features as well, but this is the most important 1.

PPCPimbackup is an amazing little utility that will backup all the contents of your phone to a selected folder. its very small and so is the backup. i have 1000+ contacts and 100+ messages and the backup size is 95Kb. it takes less than a minute to backup and the same for restoring. it also goes as far as backing up call record.

if you like the touch diamond type interface, i would suggest trying this http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-http-omnia-modaco-com/273892/complete-install-guide-for-manila-touchflo-2d-on-i900/. I found it to be quite solid and functional. only problem is that it doesn't have landscape support. but thats ok cause everything else still works.

i really like this device. it really is a powerfull little machine.

i tried the new samsung firmware but it failed:mad:. i am waiting on a response to see if i missed something.

i am also considering loading this custom rom http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-rom-discussion/274737/update-24-nov-08-custom-rom-manilla2d-with-alternate-landscape-dxhk1-m2d04/ that has M2D preloaded and configured for the omnia.

b.t.w. for those of you worried about the phone getting really hot, i don't think its the battery, but think its actually the CPU.

Might be, but rapid discharging will cause the battery to heat up.

this is what happens when i try to upgrade the firmware:

Step 4. Phone image Downloading
Downloading PHONE...
Switch USB to Phone Success...
Error! PhoneUSB Detect Failed
Port Create retry (25) till (0)
Download failed!!

The status area says: port create failed!

i installed pc studio usb driver, active sync 4.5 and the modem driver before the upgrade. do you have any ideas where the problem lies?

installed the Samsung modem driver on my PC and installed firmware exactly as per manual...again,
same problem on the very end..

Had the same problem. Found that I needed to have the phone connected to install the USB Drivers.

Fortunately removing the battery allowed me to start the process all over again. Pfffff...
Try switching the phone off plug it into the computer switch it back on then install http://sg.samsungmobile.com/promoti.../omnia/SamsungModem_xp.zip&p_visitgbn=0000012 (see if it picks up samsung MITs USB sync in device manager) and try again...

Is there any particular reason that you have to put the simcard in a card reader to update the Garmin Maps?. I will do this, but just wondered why you can't just do it with the phone connected?. Is it a preventative measure in case the Mobile Navigator s/w is running?.

No, I just ignored that. Just change the USB connection mode to mass storage>storage card. Backup the old img file and paste the new...

to be honest, i've tried almost everything on that blog including what you've mentioned. the only thing i forgot to try was to disable my firewall and anti-virus. not sure if this will help. will try it out tonight and let you know.

firmware update working

so i got a response from SabreT on samsungblog and he/she advised me to use the modem driver from this site http://fus.samsungmobile.com/omnia/SamsungModem_xp.zip and it worked:D

after i got that working, i tried the firmware on this site http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-rom-discussion/274737/update-24-nov-08-custom-rom-manilla2d-with-alternate-landscape-dxhk1-m2d04/ and it worked beautifully. the phone has 102mb storage memory available and with M2D installed i still had almost 70mb free.

Hello.
I have downloaded the firmware software an want to update as phone can be buggy at times.

However I cannot find any Samsung software for the i900 that will allow me to do a backup of all my messages and contacts.
Active sync doesnt seem to offer much.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Keep us updated how it works for you !

Hi.
All updated and operational.. and no hitches.

I used Mit's Wizard to backup all msg's ringtones and contacts which went well.

Then for the firmware upgrade I performed a hard reset first.
Then took the storage card out
Then performed the flash

Was very quick to get back to where I was using the MIT wizard.
All I need to do now is download and install the new garmaps :)

Features of the latest custom ROM 30.01.2009 (DXIA2):

Free disk space: 80 MB (and you can still enjoy all the orig apps)

Most guys seem to be extremely happy with this ROM,wonder if i should give it a go...

No need to be...just make sure you install the modem driver, active sync, reboot your pc and phone, make sure antivirus/firewall and any other apps which could interrupt the process aren't running on your pc and you should be fine.
