under 1 m or so, it is easier to disarm someone with a rifle than with a knife, even closer to 1m. Either way, both can kill you. A knife is a very short ranged weapon and a rifle is used for longer ranges.

now that is very difficult to say, given that the ownership of weapons is by itself a determent for criminals. If I was a criminal I wouldn't go into someone's house if I know he owns a gun.

Civilians do not ordinarily know how to use an assault rifle, and they'd probably be crap at killing with a knife too. You do learn quite quickly with a knife. A rile not so much.
