We live in the Shadowlands. The sun is always shining. Over the hill, around the corner, but never here.
So too can South Africa's problem of ignorance be compared to the shadows.
I read something the other day that really rang true for me. About why Africa is such a failed state. And it states that the core of the problem of Africa, or at least why it has failed to survive in an industrialized world, is because of its weather. Africa has no winter.
Europe has a winter and a brutal one. In the old days, the European people had to prepare a long time for winter. They had to create ways of storing food so that it would not go bad, because the farms were dead in the winter. The animals migrated or hibernated during the winter and could not serve as a food source. This led to a need for development in Europe. They learned to instinctively think about the next day and the next month. Survival for them meant thinking about where you be in the winter.
But Africa has no winter. Africans never learned the concept of hoarding or simply preparing for a snowy, cold winter. Animals were always in supply and the farms were always alive. They did not need to develop. So when the Europeans with their gunpowder and compasses discovered Africa, they found a continent of primitive people. People who did not consume resources as quickly as Europeans. People who were tribal and not interested in expanding. So they took it.
This is merely to illustrate the difference between a true African and simply a black person who has black skin but a white mind and attitude, a breed found in great numbers in South Africa.
On the one hand, we have a nation of impoverished black people who live life from one moment to the next. Being African, they never developed the mental capacity to plan for the day or the month after. Their poverty enforce that strongly. And their government enforces it more strongly than any other thing. Because an uneducated primitive human is an easily tamed, easily controlled animal. All that is required of them is to once every five years step out of their wallowing shadows to make a little cross next to the letters ANC. They live in the third world of South Africa, the shadowlands.
On the other hand, we have the middle and upper class blacks. They are not African. They are Western. They live in the First World of South Africa. They drive their flashy cars, they drink their Johnnie Walker blue label and they experience the joy of AA and BEE that is granted to them by the millions of poor blacks.
They are White. They are the colonists Malema should be warning his followers about. They are not African. Because they can think one small step ahead of their impoverished black brethren. They exploit the true Africans by coordinating their massive numbers to vote for a "white"-minded ruling party and they squeeze every drop out of what they are given by the government, an institution kept in power by the ignorance of the poor blacks and the consumerism of the Westernised blacks. They live in the sunlands. They have seen the light and follow the Western philosophy of exploiting others to serve their own needs.
And the core of the problem is the fact that the true Africans, the impoverished blacks who simply lack the mental capacity to link one thing to another, to think about tomorrow, are ignorant as to how they are being abused by the blacks who are educated and influenced by the West's culture. Raped by the people they think are their "family". And Malema and company tell these poor people the whites are the problem. And all the while cats like Zuma and Cyril and Malema laugh behind closed doors and live the good life.
Ironically, Malema is right. The colonists are the cause of the state of Africa. But not the white colonists of an era past. The black colonists of today.
We do indeed live in the Shadowlands.
