PTA ROBBERS STEAL R1M WORTH OF APPLE GOODS

The iStore at Centurion Mall was robbed of goods worth over R1 million on Friday, Gauteng police said.

"The following properties were taken -- iPhones, laptops, and tablets worth over a million," spokeswoman Lt-Col Khensani Magoai said in a statement.

Four men allegedly entered the store pretending to be customers before holding up the store manager with a firearm.

They then helped themselves to the electronic goods.

Police were searching for the group.

"They instructed the manager to open the safe. The suspects fled the scene in three vehicles, a white Corsa, black Audi A4, and a silver Mazda," she said.

Magoai said one of the guards at the mall gave chase but the gang started shooting at him. He was, however, not harmed.

"Police are also appealing to anyone who may have information about the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the nearest police station," she said.

It is the third iStore outlet to be hit in Gauteng in less than a month.

On August 13, the iStore at Cresta Shopping Centre was robbed and one person was injured when the gang made their getaway.

The Glen's iStore was robbed a few days later, according to Eye Witness News.

Mogoai said police were investigating to see if there was a link between the robberies.

"At this stage we do not know if they [robberies] are linked," she said.

There is an unconfirmed report of a robbery at Browns diamond store in Canal Walk last night.

I always found it strange that iStores decided to be placed close to the entrance of malls and thus being very exposed - after all, those are premium stores and products which do not rely on shoppers stumbling into it. I think that Incredible Connections and Dion Wireds will be next, as those stores are similarly exposed (think Cedar Square, Woodmead, Clearwater Mall, Fourways Crossing) - all with easy road access and getaway onto highways.

In the same vein it gives easy access for customers to get into the store. Bigger exposure and more foot traffic equates to more potential customers, especially regarding those who are not familiar with the shopping centre and what it stores it has.
