I want to give it a try.
I see they have a starter kit, but it's probably a lot cheaper just to buy the tub, perlite etc myself?
What Tek do you suggest? PF Tek looks easy, but they say the yield isn't good?
It is cheaper. Buying a kit just makes your life easier.
PF Tek is easy, and good to start with. The other thing is, how much mushrooms do you really need?
In any case, most people start with jars. For instance, let's say you make jars contained sterilised rye. You then inject your spores, and a bit later, it makes a cake. You can fruit directly from that cake. Or, you can spawn it into a monotub.
I've never used PF Tek proper, because... I have this strange aversion to vermiculite. This is because it is mined, and so not renewable. I don't know why, I don't like it. But, I have a feeling that it might be more reliable.
I frequently have rye grain jars fail to take off, and I think it is because of the difficulty in getting moisture levels right. This might be easier with PF tek, but I'm not sure.
In terms of fruiting, you can fruit a rye grain jar exactly the same as a PF tek jar. The difference is higher yield from rye grain, but maybe increased difficulty.
Just remember that once you have living mycelium, its quite resilient. So, you can get living mycelium (grain or pf tek), fruit it, get some mushies, and then spawn that to a monotub. Its a living organism, and it spreads to whatever it can eat. It only dies if it encounters contamination that it can't deal with, or if it dries out. Or gets too hot.
